Hi,

I have a 2 year old greyhound cross whippet dog, who,s fur has gone very thin on his back legs.He is very well muscled as is a racing dog,so thought it was just the muscle making his fur look sparse, but it is getting worse. He gets the best of everything,is on royal canin skin and digest, and otherwise his coat is tip top.He is black and white, and has no dandruff etc.He is frontlined regularly,so i am at a loss.Has anyone got any ideas? We also show him,so would like to find out what the problem is.

Amandaxx :(

I have a blue whippet who is very bald on his back legs, when i took him to the vets they told me he had seasonal allopecia as it only dissapears in the winter and all comes back in the summer.

bald thigh syndrome. check it out. popular in greyhounds ! im sure whippets are similar

pat parnip :- "

Button my black and white ex racing greyhound has bald back legs .They sais it was because of the high protein food shewas fed on . Her coat is covered in little bald spots but now we have reduced her protien levels her oat is coming through now and is a lot better

Ours have it too ......We thought it was just because being whippets, they are always lying down and it wore off like that little bit on a 3 month old baby`s head....

can i add here its not always the case of the protein level being to high, johns dog colt had it during the summer and his food wasnt changed as it was a winning combination he was being fed....it grew back itself after a couple of months. so dont go diving at a less protein food straight away

just something to think about.

Hi,

Yes,i agree.I know colt.My dog often wins the under 23 inch.He is a fab racing dog,and when reading up,he does need a reasonably high protein diet, but thanks for the advice.
