I love my whippets around 18 to just under 19 inches for the girls and the boys 20 to 20 1/2 not over 21. I think that they can still do what they were bred for and they look bigger than IG's but still smaller than Greyhounds, at the minute we have two girls just 18 inches and one boy 20 1/4 and I'm very happy with there height.

What do others think, what is the tallest or the smallest you could own if you couldn't have your ideal

well iv got from small to tall one just touching 18inch one 19inch and one 20inches and one 21inches and i love em all big and little :huggles:

edited to add just mesuired them again and tia is now 21inches  and blue is 23inches not 21

:( aww no i cant race tia then as iv just mesuired her and shes 21inches to the shoulder :( dam it :(

Tina is 21'' at the shoulder

When we took her to have her ear tattooed two weeks ago one of the first things the guy said was ''Oooh she's a tall one'' So as soon as I got her home I measured her.

I just put her height down to her looooong legs  It's like me......I'd be a supermodel if I didn't have such short legs (w00t)

It's been a while since I was last at a dog show so I imagine Tina WOULD look tall next to show-bred dogs :b

As Nicky says...they're ALL gorgeous  I've never really thought about the height thing......though if I had a show dog it WOULD probably be quite important :b

i dont like bitches over 19 inches, dogs my max would be 21, this is jmo

my bitches range from 17 inches to 18 3/4 dads tallest is 19 and his smallest is 17 inches, our males range from 19 to 20 , robbie im expecting to be approx 20 1/2 with a lot of bone

For the US, I prefer around 21" for the males and around 19" for the bitches. The bitches in my house range from 18.5" (Inga the half Bluestreak) to 21". My males range from 20.5" (my current special, Butters) to 23+". My 23+" is a bit on the, umm, big side. :- " This is all measured at the withers, of course.

The funny thing is, even in my big dogs - they look like whippets. There is no mistaking them for greyhounds. They have a whippet outline, shape and type.

I think more than height itself, type is of the essence. A tall dog that is ALL whippet in type is still better than a whippet within ideal height that has a greyhound underline.

Yes Kirsten spot on, as long as they look like a whippet then I can forgive a bit of size.

Big or small and in the middle I  this breed.

Our typical bitch is on the small size for North America -- 18 to 18.5 inches but the ones we produce, keep and show are all champions and all English bloodlined -- and our males vary from 19.5 to 20.5 inches. We won't accept bigger, as the bigger the dog the less it is like a whippet in our view. Our two top young males right now, sired by Cdn.Ch. Nevedith Local Lancer (son of Eng.Ch. Nevedith Justa Jesta) are both sitting on the 20 inch mark. Nice size for a whippet dog, especially a good doggy dog and not some of the small bitchier dogs I saw recently when I was at Crufts.

Lancer, bless him, never produced big, always produced dogs in the 19.5 to 20.5 inch range, and his bitches have always been petite. Most have been about 18.5 inches but several, exquisite bitches were just 18 inches. One of our girls -- 18 inches -- and an Int.Belg.Cdn.Ch. qualified for Crufts and was shown there a few years ago and the judge remarked that she was a bit small for the open bitch class! Yes she was, but she was also probably the only bitch strictly within the breed standard on the day.

We do have two taller dogs -- both rescues and neither of our breeding -- we have rescued 5 dogs from other breeders this year because we take seriously the need to rescue the breed if it requires rescue -- -- that approach the lower end of greyhound proportions. Lovely dogs, but they sure aren't whippets anymore!
