hello all whippet lovers!!

Iam a degree student studying Animal Science. Iam in the process of doing a presentation on Whippets and Iam finding it difficult to find relevant information on the racing industry. I was hoping that someone could point me in the right direction on finding about injuries and disgnosis of injuries, welfare issues, how they are housed, therapeuic and non-therapeutic drugs.

Thank You for all your help!!

There is'nt a "racing industry' it is a hobby don't know if i am being cynical but this seems an odd request especially when there is so much anti feeling at the moment re greyhound racing

There isn't an industry it is an amateur pastime.

Most dogs that I know of are kept in the house.

Injuries are the type you can expect from a small dog capable of running at 30+ mph.

That's about it.

How many words do you need for your paper? Hope you have a theasaurus for lots of padding :D

If the truth be known our racing Whippets are our pets .......They sleep on our beds, eat from our plates and demand all they want  ......They are RARLEY rehomend........They "RACE" if they feel like it :D .......and as for injuries, i'd doubt there are anymore problems with a racing Whippet as there is with any fast, free run sight Hound  ......There is NO financial gain from running our babies, they just race for their enjoyment and if we have a good one they "MAY" win a plastic trophy of a fancy rosette .....and a possible title thats not reconised by anyone other than peddie racers  .......Sounds mad dosn't it ?? .....but to see the look on the face of a true chasing/racing dog is great, and they ENJOY it sooooo much  ......... ........and at the moment chasing a piece of plastic is P.C .........If you have anymore questions about pedigree Whippet racing, please feel free to phone me :) ........Hannah ........(I've PM'ed you my number :)) ) ............ :luck: :luck: :luck: with your degree

hannah, that is spot on and 100% true.

our babies are our babies and always will be.

as hannah says there is no gain (in money)( as in greyhounds) and we only run our dogs for their enjoyment. (and our enjoyment in seeing a breed that is meant to run)

(it is nice to have a good dog but it is not our main concern)

our racing is all about seeing our dogs enjoy themselves ( and a good social side of meeting some really nice people who think the same)

whippetlover1983 your very quite why dont you give us some background to your studies?

Racing whippets are just pets who happen to enjoy an ameteur sport. Being pets, they are not rehomed when they are too old to race but stay with their owners. The vast majority live in the house like any other pet dog.

All dogs (and especially sight hounds) just love a game of "chase" even if it is only a piece of plastic. Its the whippet equivalent of doing obedience or agility or flyball. The word "industry" couldn't be more inapropriate I'm afraid as its just for fun and there is no betting and no prize money allowed in pedigree racing at all.

Pedigree racing is governed by the Whippet Club Racing Association which is a sub-committee of The Whippet Club who are in turn answerable to the Kennel Club.

Definatly pets first Judy, if they take to racing great but if not we still love them any way, :huggles: The number of people who think we rehome them when they cant race anymore is unbelievable, people also think were mad travelling all over the country to race when theres no money involved, imo thats why whippet racing is a lovely FRIENDLY sport. :)

Couldn't agree more Paula. Most people start racing because they have a pet whippet already and are just looking for a way to give their dog a bit of fun and to meet other people who are interested in and love dogs.
