Hi community members,

I would like to draw on your wealth of experience as I have never owned a whippet before.

My whippet is nearly 3 1/2, she enjoys walks off the lead and chasing anything that moves. Until I put a stop to it after she returned from one such venture with a back leg held in the air. It was diagnosed as a torn cruciate ligament and I was given the operation options. I decided to rest her for a week and her lameness disappeared. I got a second opinion recently regarding her leg and was told her ligament was fine. However, if I let her run for a extended period of time or allow her to play with my sisters pup (which includes spinning round in circles) her limp returns and on occasions she suddenly looks at her leg as if something has bitten her. The lameness seems to manifest after she has had a sleep in her bed and has disappeared again the next day.

Please advise me. Has anyone experienced anything similar? Do whippets get cramp? Are they prone to tendon inflammation or hip problems?

No doubt another trip to the vets is in order but I wanted to ask THE experts first.

Many thanks for your time.

I am afraid it is rest , not just a week but for approx 2 months .

You can walk her but NO FREE RUNNING

There are more knowledgable people than me in racing who should be able to give you good advice

As Carol has said, one week is not nearly enough to repair any whippet injury. Even quite minor injuries take six weeks and a cruciate ligament is not minor.

Back on the lead and let us know how she is in June :)

got a whipx but have got to agree more rest is needed. if it is cruciate then you got to get a proper anwser as its always going to be a problem. xrays could be needed.

We've been to the vets AGAIN. The draw test and lack of swelling led to the diagnosis; the cruciate is not to blame for the limping. I'd like to say my mind is at rest but he said the symptoms sounded like Arthritis but Beau is too young for this, however, if she's got some scar tissue somewhere that's irritated by certain movements then it will become inflamed and cause a limp. I'm still left guessing. We've stuck to lead walks and all was well until a stumble when she rushed to greet me today, she whimpered slightly, and after a walk - the limp is back. It starts with her leg held in the air, looking like cramp has set in, then she hops from one leg to the other and finally- the limp. But it doesn't stop her playing with Ducky or flinging a dental stick around the room. Are xrays going to help with mine and her predicament ?

Im afraid when dogs need checking out it costs but just a thought, are you anywhere.near a greyhound track? Maybe worth going down and having a chat and asking to see their vet.

Thanks lurcherman, I may just do that. I'm not a million miles from Belle Vue race track.

kirky lane yeah, been there yrs back for the speedway, best of luck and let us know what they say.

Waste of money going to more vets or x-rays until you have given her the 6 weeks' rest - lead walks, no leaping around with puppies, she needs. There are no short cuts.
