A gentleman in the Southern Highlands, south of Sydney Australia, is selling his collection of whippet / sighthound memorabilia. The pieces have been purchased over a span of 40 years and from various parts of the world.
There are the usual pieces that one sees (whippet head bookends), but there are also some rare collector pieces including an exquisite white french statue, a first cast bronze, two solid silver whippets with a ball between the front feet and one of the whippets is mounted on a silver inkwell stand that is stamped by a silversmith in the UK.
There is a Noritake whippet / greyhound with a small fracture in the leg plus some unusual one off pieces that friends have made, eg a ceramic relief of a sleeping whippet done by Australia potter, Ian Sprague. There are the usual cast and resin statues and some prints.
There is a gorgeous piece of a grecian style lady seated over the barometer with a whippet / sighthound jumping up. I believe this piece may have been the top of a clock.
A quirky item is the small silver two whippets lying with a silver bar across their backs which I was informed is for you to rest your chopsticks on.
If the rarer pieces are not purchased by whippet fanciers, they will probably be sent to the UK for auction.
There is a story behind many of the pieces and much love for the breed by someone who never showed or bred but owned several whippets over their lifetime. Age, sadly, has caught up and now it is time to downsize and move which is why the pieces are available.
If you are a genuinely interested in whippet memorabiia and SERIOUSLY interested and would like a copy of the list and a photo of any pieces you are interested in, please email me privately (ridgesetter@optusnet.com.au).
Regards
