Whippet Puppy Collars?

Hello people,

We are hoping to be the new owners of a whippet pup soon and we know that whippets have a specific type of collar, however, do these types of collars exist for a whippet pup? Or do people just use a regular whippet collar for a pup? The smallest whippet collar we can find is 10" - 14", would this be too big?

Does anyone know of any good shops or internet sites that sell good whippet collars/coats?

Hello there granny, grandad here whippy collars will be a tad to big for your puppy, what i did was use a kitten collar till your puppy fills out

I normally use just a cheap puppy collar ,until they grow into a whippet type . I then use a small size that you can put an extra hole in if needed .

Then you can buy you them the fanciest collar you can find for best and one for the beach [as they do get very wet and sandy ] :wub: :huggles: and every day wear o

Can't say I've ever thought of a kitten collar, great idea.

We are still waiting on our whippet books to arrive so don't have all the knowledge yet so I'm just going to ask the question :- " ... why are whippet collars wider and made of leather? I'm guessing it's because they have weak windpipes or something but if that's the case then why don't you see many whippets in harnesses? I'm probably wrong on that score tho. :blink:

We use an ordinary puppy collar or like Keith says a cat collar is ok too,(no bell your puppy might choke on that) my advice would be when your puppy is big enough for a whippet collar don't buy an expensive one because they grow quickly and it will probably chew it anyway o

Whippet collars are wide because whippets have a long slender neck and they act as support,they don't have weak windpipes to my knowledge :thumbsup:

If you can get hold of a soft Iggy collar this is ideal. A kitten collar is OK to get the pup used to wearing a collar but don't leave it on the pup when you are not there.

You will find the Iggy collar is useful when you get the next Whippet puppy. (and the next and the next )

We bought Molly a nice whippet collar for when she grew up but she never grew into it and still wears an iggy collar, even though she is nearly 3 :wub:

So, yeah, don't waste your money on a leather one just yet. They may outgrow it too quickly or never grow into it

On my post 'Scarletfair Starry Knight', Hugo is modelling a lovely, really soft suede Iggy collar made by Elizabeth (Moriarte) It fits him a treat and he is nine weeks old :huggles:

Not necessarily weak windpipes but because their necks are long and slender both their trachea and oesophagus are much nearer the surface and need protection so a wide collar speads the load, as it were, when the dog leans into the collar otherwise it will put too much pressure on one area, causing the dog to cough and choke.

That's why I've started to experiment with making soft collars, I've noticed that pulling on a stiff collar brings on fits of reverse coughing and it's particularly bad at race/coursing meeting when they're pulling all the time. I tested out a whippet-sized soft one at lurecoursing on Sunday, I'm glad to say it didn't stretch or break, and we didn't have a single coughing fit.

We used a small nylon one from pets at home which had a squidgy padded lining which stopped it cutting in. An Italian Greyhound collar sounds ideal tho!

Our Blue has just outgrown her puppy collar bought off ebay, and we also have a coat off e-bay too and her new collar is off ebay as well!

The puppy collar was superb, padded and hard wearing, she fit into it just in time for her first proper walk too! She now has an adult collar which is wider, the puppy collar is wider than a normal puppy collar and served us well.
