Two whippet pups, a brother and sister of about 10 weeks old (see pic), were discovered in disgusting conditions in a pet shop in South Africa. They were emaciated and very dirty with distended little bellies, their cage was much, much too small, no blanket or chews, only dry pellets and water. They were left in the shop over weekends and at night, unattended with only each other for company. :( :(

The situation was reported to an animal rescue organisation, but apparently there were not sufficient grounds to confiscate the pups. The whippet rescue fraternity went into overdrive. These two pups were just waiting for an unscrupulous puppy mill breeder to walk in, buy them and start farming with a brother and a sister!!! WHAT TO DO? :b Moreover, dogs ending up in many of the townships are at a HUGE risk of being doomed to a life of scavenging where people don't have enough money to feed or look after themselves, let alone their dogs. :( :(

Within days the money had been raised to buy the pups and the animal rescue organisation arranged with a vet to house them until they had been innoculated, dewormed and checked out for underlying medical conditions. They were named "Clyde" and "Lucy". Kind whippeteers took their own dogs to socialise and play with them during their confinement at the vet (See pic)

Within 2 weeks, wonderful homes had been found for both Lucy and Clyde, and I'm pleased to report they are now doing VERY WELL (see pic) of Lucy) and their progress is being monitored.

Will keep you updated on the story of Lucy and Clyde.

Thank God there was a happy ending but what the hell are grounds for confiscation in South Africa if willful neglect and cruelty aren't?

The animal rescue organisations in South Africa and many of the developing nations are simply overwhelmed and under-resourced. If they confiscate an animal they have to have the resources to defend the confiscation in court - which means gathering evidence, reports, photos, etc - all of which takes manpower and money, which they simply don't have. A VERY SAD STATE OF AFFAIRS INDEED. :( :(

OMG those eyes are just so expresive ,

Well done to the whippet rescue for getting those babies out of there
