It does cost a lot when you have to travel over the sea.

On average a championship show can cost me £300+

Boat - £157 (this varies according to the time of year, cheaper in the winter)

Entries - £70 - 100 depending upon how many dogs are entering.

B&B £30 - however do try and stay at mums at she lives in Birmingham and inlaws that live in Blackpool

Petrol - £50 - 100.

But I do love showing and I have a very understanding hubby. Like everyone else I am now starting to look realistically at the shows and the judges, especially as 3 of mine have their stud book numbers and I will only be taking the boys to Crufts. This summer will be busy but next year I will not be showing as much, much to my hubby's dismay because he keeps saying it is your hobby and while we can afford it, do it. I think he just loves having the weekends to himself!!! :lol:

I think it's the same for everyone at the moment, i don't think i will be going

to many more shows as i travel on my own it is getting to expensive for me it would be easyer if i could find someone to share with then i could take 2 dogs as this year i have only been taking biscuit,i have been leaving ben behind

I have stopped going to open shows as i work weekends, and if i have to have one off i would rather it was for a champ show.

i generally go to shows with Kathryn and Hannah and share the fuel but the cost is still very limiting, apart from SKC where i visit friends at the same time, anything further than a 1and half - 2 hour drive and i'm not going.

not only have i cut back on a lot of shows but also racing and ringcraft, which was as much for a social meet of friends each week as training the dogs

i can't afford this country anymore

think i'll learn french and move :thumbsup:

In our case I know that we are being much more picky about the shows that we will enter. We have 3 dogs that we actively campaign at the moment and with our new puppy this will go up to 4. Obviously, it means that we will not be able to afford to take all of them to the shows we enter and we will be thinking very carefully about where we will travel to and which of the dogs we will enter etc.
I really do enjoy Open shows and we are lucky in that living in the Midlands we are 90 mins travelling time from a lot of shows; if we weren't I'm sure that we wouldn't go to many. Jo and I have just entered lots of the lovely Summer outdoor and agricultural shows with the 2 youngsters and are really looking forward to them - most of all these shows are a lovely day out with our family and I would hate to miss out on them.

I was just speaking to someone today saying how much better I feel having been to a show at the weekend, as I feel I have done something positive with my weekend that I really enjoy doing; it is my main hobby and I do miss it if we go for a month without any shows to go to. 

Although I can't claim to pay for a lot of the entry fees, I do pay for some of them, so Jo and I are lucky in that the entry fees are split some what. But it is the cost of fuel that will really hit people. Our most economical car is obviously not the most practical for travelling with a few dogs in the back. My BMW Estate is the most dog friendly, but it guzzles fuel like you wouldn't believe and would cost a days wages to get to a champ show and back 

It seems that every single one of us is in the same predicament. None of us have endless pots of money to spend on our hobby so I can only see that this will result in dropping entry numbers until the cost of fuel is significantly reduced

There were queues for petrol this morning were I went too. Can't help but agree with you Keith. The folk I feel sorry for are the young ones who are still at school. My two are already wondering how on earth they are going to afford a house. They are 14 and 12. I'm sure they can't be the only ones.

I must admit to being quite scared at the consant daily rise in petrol prices

I too have pup coming out soon , and will only show at the shows were I think /hope the judge will like her . again where poss , and then again I also have India to show , and Mikkee, Libbee etc

I will try to get a travelling companion ,anyone one will do :- " , as long as they have whippets and lots of sweeties , and obviously a car that will get us there and back , we can use my car too

Exactly what my lady said last night, god help the young ones, you can all laugh at this, cos i do, many years ago, i had a plastic pig, :lol: reliant robin, 10 bobs worth of petrol and it got me to cornwall, :lol: as for now, wot a miserable existance i lead, im on a miserable little pension, but do part time odd jobs fer folks to top it up, im even dipping into my lifes savings, bugger it when its gone its gone, im not proud, pride dunna pay my bills, out wants doing and i will do it, roof work, gardening, i even do work for a magistrate, wot a character he is, now weers my plastic mac., thing is, you gotta keep smiling, nowt you can do as an individual, it needs us all pulling together enough is enough eh, innit

I must agree with Jax, I too am scared where it will end, or not as the case may be. Things seem to be getting out of control generally in alot of areas now.

I am lucky that Rach is my 'partner' in the dogs so we can split the costs but she has a young family & the commitments that brings & we have to bear this in mind too.

But I suppose you could say it is, currently, a little easier for us than many as we share but we still have to consider before entering more than Joe & Chelsea and then there is the next generation to consider, Jazmin, who now wants to come but as yet has not found a paper round to pay her way :- " mind you at 6 years old......... :teehee: :teehee: :teehee: :teehee: :teehee: :teehee:

and then Rob, Rach's partner, shows an interest if the venue, or area, is right so we not only have an extra driver (& someone to cart the bags etc) but they now think about treating it as a family day out.

Gosh trains.....no go on cost from here & facilities now but I so remember travelling to Crufts with a Whippet, Irish Wolfhound & owner, a friend, toddler Rach & everything needed for the long day.......were we mad? but what a cracking day we had :thumbsup:

I am enjoying your posts on this thread, MLKeith, even though the subject matter is grim. I didn't watch all those episodes of All Creatures Great and Small on public television over here for nothing...I am trying to read your posts as they would be spoken and it's very cool and colorful for a bland American like myself!

I guess we should quit whining so much on our side of the pond...at least we don't have big lines at the pump yet, although the news today was depressing that the prices aren't expected to come down anytime soon.

The US has certainly sucked up more than their share of resources, after all.

It's amazing how fuel prices are impacting EVERYTHING. Dog food prices are rising sharply.

Why not start a topic for those who wish to share the driving and expenses?You could post the shows you are interested in gouing to and the area you are leaving from.  Surely there must be some people strarting from the same area and going to the same show.  I realise that this is not practical if you are both taking several dogs. )

EAST YORKSHIRE - COULD SHARE WITH 1 + 1 whippet

 

Unless I am using the Humber Bridge I have to travel to M18 or M62/A1 to go anywhere, North or South
