I have had whippets for 15 years and they have all sometimes had the snifffles - as though they have got dust or something in their long noses!! It has always resolved itself in a short time.

My puppy started a couple of weeks ago, then it stopped, then it started etc etc. While I was at Leeds yesterday, my friend looked after her and she said she had a couple of real bouts of the sniffles - she is now worse and (pardon the expression) she now sounds very snotty. She is absolutely fine, eating, playing and everything I would expect from a young whippet.

I am going to ring the vets in the morning, I wonder if she has an infection in her nasal tract.

Has anyone else had a similar problem to this, I would be grateful for any information and advice.

No advice Jool sorry Im sure it was Jo on K9 that had a problem very similar with one of her dogs. Maybe you could pm her.

My Macy gets this quite regularly. I've taken her to the vets and it has been treated with antibiotics. The last time I took her the vet wants her in and have a camera put up her nose and if anything there take a biopsy. I have'nt decided if I want to do this as the last bout she had did not last too long and cleared up without any medicine. Macy loves to dig and me and my husband seem to think it could be something she snorts up and irritates her. Hope everthing is OK for you and would be interested to here what your vet says.

my dogs get this as well and it always goes away without any medication. Sometimes one snorts only once and then nothing for months and months. I also think it's just something up their nose. They never look sick.

I took Sky to the vets who thinks she has an infection, possibly caused by having a seed lodged - but she thinks anti biotics will do the trick -time will tell. In between making the appointment and getting to the vets, Sky had knocked 2 front toes up. They are still extremely swollen, though the vet doesn't think there is anything broken (neither do I) An anti-inflammatory injection has done little to bring the swelling down and it is obviously troubling Sky quite a bit. I have been applying ice packs. Has anyone any suggestions? It is almost 48 hours since she knocked herself.

I just hope that Sky is not going to be one of those whippies that are always hurting themselves!!!!

Yep it was Stan the Man who was suffering from very similar symptoms to this, in fact he still is

He was very snotty, but also snorting and also coughing like something was stuck in his throat. My vet throught it was a blade of grass stuck. Some antibiotics quickly cleared up the infection in his nose but didn't stop the cough - unfortuantely its only steroids that seem to sort this out.

He had a full probe investigation - and nothing conclusive arose from it. The symptoms started last December when he was about 18 months old.

I discovered that a wool blanket he used to lie on made it a lot worse, but myself and the vet think it is probably some type of allergic reaction. He is generally okay but i have on hand some low dose steroids (same type as Dessie uses on her girl Coco who suffers from this also) I just give him a couple when it flares up, normally about every 2 weeks.

Stan also has high doses of our garlic & fenugreek tablets which seem to help also. But I think he will always suffer with this, but it certainly doesn't effect his exercise at all - I just keep monitoring the situation as to when it gets worse or better etc etc
