I have just seen an advert for someone wanting an Italian Greyhound to mate their Whippet.

Is this cross quite rare?

Just there seems to be an awful lot of Greyhound x Whippets so how come you never see Ig x Whippets?

Personally I can't see much point in such a cross. The two breeds can overlap in size i.e there are some ig's bigger than whippets. So you don't need ig to bring size down. Sure I'll get jumped on by iggy owners but I can't see what they would contribute to say a small working sighthound. If you want "cute" both breeds are cute enough without outcrossing IMO.

I think that as italian greyhound pups are so few and far between, it would seem a shame to 'waste' a valuable mating on more cross-breed pups :wacko:

I guess small whippet bitch mayed to IGY would produce small but sturdier than IGY little sighthounds, which may be very attractive to people for whom Whippet nowadays is bit too big and they think IGYs are too fragille.

To mate IGY bitch to Whippet would be silly and dangerour as the pups could be too big for her.

If you saw my lot after live game you would understand why they would want to use them. I was asked once to use one of mine over a bedlington bitch.

Don't say that - I have a friend whose Papillon dog managed to mate her Whippet bitch. The resulting pups were very attractive - but I would obviously not condone any deliberate breeding of such crosses.

Ive just had an email from someone with an 8 month whippet puppy bitch wanting a stud to mate her with NOW (w00t) . Just because she KC reg`d microchiped and vacinated :angry:

I replied , likened it to letting an 11 year old girl have a baby :- "

Have to say i agree 100%, what on earth is the point of bringing yet another litter of cross breeds into the world. If you want a slightly smaller whippet i am sure you can find one slightly smaller & finer from the racing world & if you want a whippet sized IG.....................................well i'll say no more :- "

I do agree in principle, but assuming that this bitch is going to be bred regardless, does it really matter what is she mated to? There is going to be X number more of pet puppies in the world. :unsure:

Thats disgusting of the people, are they mad? Obviously just after making some money!! :rant: Doesnt a bitch have to be over a certian age when she has pups in order for the pups to be KC reg anyway? :unsure: I believe dogs used at stud have to be over 18months else the offspring cant be reg? :unsure:

No age limit on a dog if he is able to produce then he will produce.

A bitch must be over 12 months at time of mating , not heard of a limit on how old the stud dog has to be though

Here in Queensland under CCC Rules Code of Ethics:

I shall not breed from any bitch kept or owned by me causing it to whelp before it has reached the age for my particular breed as specified by ANKC regulations and any subsequent amendments or in the absence of such specification, the age of 12 mths.

I shall not breed from any male dog under the age of 9 mths

I shall not permit any of my purebred dogs to be mated to a dog of a different breed, to a crossbreed or to an unregistered dog of the same breed.

Just the other day I had a phone call somebody looking for a whippet to use at stud for bitch who was just ready to be mated. Although I do not have a male I got her chatting. She did not have the papers, and I was trying to explain that she should not bred from her as Whippet pups are not easy to sell, and that she is bound to be out of pocket - the only thing poeple like that understand. To that she replied;

OH, I DO NOY WANT TO HAVE THE LITTER, I JUST WANT TO GET HER PREGNANT SO I CAN SELL HER FOR MORE MONEY.

It was very difficult to remain cool, composed and kind, but I think I did manage to get through to her that she is not going to have better chance to sell the bitch :wacko:

That really is sad, and even sadder is that she will probably find someone who will oblige her. What chance for that poor bitch
