We met a lady last night walking a whippet so got talking to her about whippets. :D

But she told us he's not a Whippet but a JRT x whippet

Is it possible that from a JRT x Whippet mating you would get some dogs that looked just like Whippets

Cheers

Steve

My Oliver is a JRT/whippet too! I fondly thought he would pass for a whippet too until I took him to the Beetelian household - he has definite JRT likenesses, especially when he's barking!!

Forgot to say, terrier whippet crosses are lurchers and are known as "whirriers" although Beejay will probably know more about that than me!! :D

I saw two puppy jrt x whips at racing 2 weeks ago, they just looked like little whippets with curly tails :D

He's a really lovely looking dog isn't he

It got us wondering about Picco because although he acts very much like a whippet he has lots of little mannerisms (sp) which are very JRT like so perhaps he's a little Whirrier as well :D

He does look quite stocky as well :D

Cheers

Thanks Steve! :D They do look quite similar, don't they, although I'm really not qualified to say! I always Picco's ears were a bit weird for a true whippet, but then again I'm still learning! He's gorgeous too, whatever he is!

Oliver's bark is all JRT and could not be mistaken for anything else!! (w00t) Albie does not bark nearly so much and his bark is very different!

Sarah Pirie, who shows, had a JRT/Whippet and it was almost impossible to say that it was JRT apart from a slightly thicker tail and a bit wider in back skull.

I dont think Picco is a cross. And most JRT crosses Ive seen are bright colours, ie red fawn white trim or red fawn parti. But I have seen a lot of Whippets with ears like Picco's :p

Anything is possible

Is the Whirrier the latest Designer dog, havent heard of that one till I read this thread.

after seeing a doberman x chuwowa and the chuwowa must have been a very detrmined lad i think anything can happen

Coincidence! I met a JRT/whippet/"allsorts" on the Common the day before yesterday. It was a sweet little thing, like a slighty daintier and slightly taller JRT, but much smaller than a whippet. He looked extremely young and sprightly - I thought he must be a pup but the owner told me he was 14 years-old (the owner was the one who came up with JRT/whippet/"allsorts" moniker). If I bump into them again I'll try and get a pic. The owner said his (the dog's) temperement was quite nervous and a bit snappy.

It's a lurcher term as I understand it. You'll have to get more information from folk who know a damn sight more than me about lurchers, but it is, I believe, a bona fide term and aeons old!! Lurcherlass told me all about it!! :)

A lurcher is a x between a sighthound and a herding dog, a longdog is a x between 2 sighthounds, and a whirrier the terrier x sighthound.

The majority of peeps, call anything that has one or more sighthound breeds in it a lurcher.

Bj knows a lot more about these types of dogs than me,when we used to help G.R.W.E. I often asked why/what the lurcher types we had were ?She usually knows the reasoning behind adding something to a sighthound.

When two dogs are mated, the pups will inherit genes from both sets of parents, by crossing a JRT with a Whippet, it is quite possible to get a pup or pups that resemble one of the parents in appearance.

A friend of mine had a Beardie x Terrier, he looked pure beardie,he's a bloody menace.A huge, hairy terrier with attitude.

My girl, her name is Freckle is a JRT x Whippet, too. At least that's what every Vet, no matter if it was an English or German Vet has told me. I got her out of the Manchester Dog's home in November 2005 and since than she lives with me. She was found as a stry and was close to starving. Whenever I have to travel between Germany and the UK she is on board. At least as long as I am taking my car. She is a wonderful dog and so calm as long nobody rings the doorbell! ;o)

Inside the flat or house, she just curles up and sleeps. Outside she loves to run and is faster than every dog she usually plays with.

Would be great to get in touch with other owners of JRT x Whippet.

Hi Skismurf. :) Freckle is a gorgeous girlie!    If you're ever in the North Essex/South Suffolk area (Colchester/Ipswich in other words) then you must come and visit the mad house! Your girl looks more terrier than Oliver but you can tell there's whippet in there too.

Apparently our rescued girl Misty is JRT x Whippet ....but I do not see any whippet in her at all...also she behaves like typical terrier - so bossy and so energetic.. :))

She looks like taller JRT or Parsons terrier..( people think she is a Parsons terrier)…

Here she is..can you see a whippet in her?

had one of these xs 30years ago nothing new about these

The Spotty Dog, my first ever 'own' dog (going back more years than I'm going to admit) was a rescue and said to be a whippet/JRT, though I always suspected there was a dash of collie in there somewhere too.

I loved that dog to pieces, he was such a character and had the nicest nature you could imagine but he was also the naughtiest dog I've ever had - an escape artist, food obsessed beyond belief and the cleverest and most resourceful thief ever. I've always said that Spotty Dog's role in life was to make every dog I've had since seem 'easy'. I still miss him, though.

I must dig out some of my old photographs, this one doesn't show him very well, but he was whippet sized and general build with a more JRT head. Very fast, very clever and constantly on the go.

Hey!!! I've got a Whirrier!! This is our Scrumpy, we don't know for sure but the general opinion is that she's BedlingtonXWhippet, so.....a Whirrier :))
