How do you decide that a non ped has too much greyhound in it without testing the DNA then? And what percentage does it have to have to be classed a grew or non ped? It feels like one of those questions that will never be answered.................like why cant men multitask and women can  :- " I guess it will keep on being a bone of contention for a long time into the future. Maybe a non ped should have to have been able to race in a percentage of both straight opens and bends opens to qualify for any points in the Fed and BWRA?

SORRY CHRIS BUT THAT WOULD NOT WORK AS THERE ARE TO MANY DOGS BIG AND SMALL THAT JUST CANT , OR THERE OWNERS CHOOSE NOT TO RUN BOTH STRAIT AND BEND EVENTS

A FEW I CAN THINK OF

CHUNKY, WEARDALE SPOT , BLUE REFLECTIONS ANY MANY MORE GREAT DOGS THAT ONLY RUN THE STRAITS

GARY  :D

it's ok gaz, was thinkin more of bigger dogs that would have to fit into whippet traps on the straights that were smaller traps. :)

I don't believe there is a solution, for one Chris's suggestion could exclude certain dogs, an example I hope Mark Warren doesn't mind me making is Sailaway. There are quite a few dogs that are incapable of running bends due to inability or physical injuries that play a factor in bends racing but not on straights and vice versa.

I know there's been previous suggestions of all dogs running out of whippet traps at all races but this can be a great inconvenience for the organisers.

My bigger concern is that by introducing exclusions, your preventing some dogs from running, something which I worry would contribute to re-homing of dogs. If this was size or weight exclusions then this could result in rehoming adult dogs which can be even more difficult. Instigating restrictions on the amount of greyhound blood in a litter is a minefield and could result in individuals lying about their breeding, I think this would be disastrous as it's happened within KC dogs and resulted in genetic databases and DNA becoming the norm.

I know recently a dog owner wishing to register their dog had to have witnesses state that the dog was not a greyhound, I think this is proposterous and those willing to act as witnesses could put themselves in a vulnerable position where they could be held liable and furthermore they cannot accurately be witnesses in my opinion.

Personally, I think it's better to let all dogs regardless of breeding run and that includes pure bred greyhounds. Realistically there are going to be very few greyhound owners that are going to take their top class dog to run at a whippet racing event purely as they have bigger fish to fry.

I think I was trying to say that dogs shouldnt only race the bends cos they dont fit into straight traps which tend to be smaller? I agree that no exclusions would be far better. live and let live for me :D

I see Rose has pups out of her smashing bitch MISS TORI and SUGAR DADDY, now i`m not trying to cause trouble, but what would these pups be classed as ?
http://www.k9community.co.uk/cgi-bin/nonpe...bmit=Create+Now

they hardly are anything but greyhounds !! come on surely they are called greyhound crosses.

d

Lurcher racers who live in class houses shouldn't throw stones, because this post might come back and bite your ass

j  dj

Suppose when it really comes down to it, they will be called what ever there owners want then to be

lurcher's, none ped, sight hounds i could go on , but whats the point

Still think there cracking looking pups

Can`t for the life of me think why anyone would want in the first case to breed a litter of non-reg greyhounds ?

Greyhound breeding in Ireland is a big business ! If the bitch is decent she is bred from, if she`s not then she is not kept and certainly not bred from !

Nobody with a decent bitch is going to breed her and then pass them off as whippets ! Nothing to be gained by that except expence !

All Greyhound matings have to be registered within 2 weeks with the Stud Book, pups registered within 2 weeks of being born and earmarked at 8-10 weeks. If you wanted to unregister a pup to pass it of as a whippet you would be certainly very clever to pick out one that could even remotley fall into that class as a whippet and why do it anyway as you could sell the pup as a Greyhound anyway ! Doesn`t add up in my book, but there again stranger things have happened !

The smallest Greyhound i`ve ever seen is 48lbs and you certainly wouldn`t be keeping one like her for breeding to a Greyhound. I`ve certainly never bred anything that has been that small thankfully ! !

I did send a small one over last year to a whippet breeder. She cost €3500 as a pup and she was earmarked, but never developed into anything. She was by TOP HONCHO out of a sister of PREMIER FANTASY ! I don`t know if she was bred with yet, but I certainly wasn`t going to waste my time breeding from her !

I'm surprised you with your experience of both whippet and greyhound racing can't see the gains there could be made by passing off a greyhound as a whippet?

Your right the bitch is not kept if it's not fit for greyhound breeding, however just because it's not suitable for greyhound breeding doesn't mean it isn't suited to whippet linings

Maybe not everyone with a decent bitch but what about those of lesser quality? Like you say Greyhound breeding in Ireland is big business, so there'll be plenty of amateurs trying to make a buck or two.

I don't think people would try unregistering a pup, they'd be looking out for small sprinting bitches that are well bred and have a tendancy to throw small pups, undesirable to greyhound breeding but very much in demand for whippet linings.

It should be noted there is No Limit on the No Limit class and there's quite a few 50+ lber's whippets running.

Well obviously your not going to breed from her as she doesn't suit your line of business, she could have great appeal within the world of whippets though.

as a bit of fun last yr at the whippet racing practice day i run my dogs out of traps,i know every one knows as it was about a race with a greyhound whippet whic i lost it was all over this site,so no secret, havnt gone out of traps any were else though, would love to see her now shes no pup and in her prime 2 and a bit,and tt as you like to be known  i have no problem with whippet greyhounds, what i have a problem with is people racing, yes racing them at non ped meetings and at lurcher shows in my eyes there one are another cant be both, there whippets are there lurchers again one are the other not both, mine are collie greyhounds not non peds not whippets colliee greyhounds, any way this doesnt come in to showing its racing????????and you have already said you arnt coming to one show were iam judging as there was a few of you coming thats fine with me maybe i can send you a list of shows and you can cancell all ;) its not about the judge its you dont want to race your dog against cat,but thats fine with me

No, the bitch I sent over was injury free, just too small and had no pace. She would have been PTS but for her breeding and I offered her to somebody with whippets, who not suprisingly snapped her up !

Her dams name was WHITE HILL and her details are here

http://www.greyhound-data.com/d?i=885123

Have never heard how she got on or what happened her ! Wasn`t that bothered really as long as she went to a good home ! I`m sure I will hear about her if she throws a good one !

As regards making `a quick buck` from un-reg greyhounds, I don`t think so ! -_-

Maybe i am thinking of the wrong bitch...was it Malcolm whom got her and lined her with master blaster

No she is my bitch she still weighs 48lb and has great pace

I take her up to the local track when I can and run her at the Sussex Longdog Association against greyhounds, she is a great little bitch and I will breed from her when she is a bit older. Everybody knows she is a greyhound because I have told them. she could easily pass as a non ped but I have no interest in racing a greyhound and telling people she is a non ped. I took her to a lurcher race meeting the other day and they measured her at under 24" they just assumed she was a whippet x greyhound I just went along with it for about 5 mins and then entered her in the greyhound race. When they saw her run they said thank god she is not in with the lurchers .So thank you Martin for letting me have her she is kenelled with another greyhound Waddle Off which you also let me have. She also runs at the Longdogs and has won a lot of races, but only against young and retired greyhounds. I think you have seen some of the pups I have had from her. I will try and get some pictures of them soon but every whippet person I know has already seen them and I would never try and pass her off as a non ped whippet and to be perfectly honest, she would probably get beaten anyway!

her breeding is great and I follow her litter brothers on the greyhound data base and they are all doing well with great pace. She has just finished her season so I will probably breed with her next year, not sure what I am going to use yet.

GARY   :D

After reading this topic on the lurcher section which is now closed, I read the post that you put on Linda

To import a non-ped bred racing whippet to race in the lurchers, I think is unsportsmanlike
I immediately took offence to this remark  even though it may have not been aimed at me and Hazel. The last litter we bred Jack the Lad x Maggie produced 10 pups and 4 of these went to lurcher racing homes.

Am I supposed to turn good homes down just because their new owners want to race them in the lurcher racing?

It's hard enough to find good homes for your pups without dictating to prospective new owners what they can and cannot do with their dogs.

When this mating took place I posted it on both the non-ped and on the lurcher section, and I was contacted by a friend over in Ireland who informed me that he knew of 3 reliable people who would like to purchase pups off us  which they did, and I do not regret

In the past these so called unsportsmanlike people acquried these rejects because they were too big and heavy to race in the yard a pound handicap or they weren't fast enough :( that's how I ended up with afew grew's  lurchers

I often wonder what their destiny would have been if I'd not taken them off their hands

The only unsportsmanlike people we have come across when we were lurcher racing, were the minority of poor losers. We had our ups and downs with afew racers, but at the end of the day we respected each others dogs achievements  abit like non-ped racers do

Geoff & Hazel (ex lurcher racers for the time being)

Thanks for that Gary and the best of luck with her !

No Denise the bitch I gave to Malcom was a Larkhill Jo-Pharmacist bitch, who broke her leg and never came right. She was about 60lbs, but had smashing bloodlines. I don`t think her litter to Master Blaster had any luck.

I think she has been mated again recently, but I can`t remember too what ?

I RUN MY WHIPPET GREYHOUNDS AT LURCHER MEETINGS AS OFTEN AS I CAN AND NEVER GET TOLD IM A CHEAT OR THATS NOT RIGHT BUT THEN AGAIN HALF THE DOGS I RUN AGAINST HAVE MY BREEDING OR HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH ME LOL

THERE WILL ALWAYS BE SOMEONE THAT DOES NOT AGREE THERE PROBLEM NOT MINE :b
