16 month old whippet dog will not stop pulling on the lead. :( . tried everything i know, anyone got any tips

Walk backwards, when the dog is where it should be give the command "close, heel etc" and praise ......then try walking forwards again if they pull again turn round and go back home = end of walk ...... It doesn't normally take long for the pennie to drop  ...... :luck: :luck:

Hi Zeb was terrible at pulling when we first got him.(he was 21/2) have you tryed having food in your opposite hand. Another way i stopped him was to put him on a harness and every time he pulled was to do a circle with him so that he got back to the heel position. If you watch dog borstal a bit like the way they do it on the program. Hope this helps.

What i found if he pulled and i pulled him back it made it worse.

Hope this helps. It may take a while though so keep with it.

Yup!

Digit used to be dreadful til i spent a long hard week during an intensive month simply refusing to walk when he pulled - the first day it took me over an hour to make the 5 minute walk to the duck pond....a huge amount of perseverance and a lot more stubbornness than my dog possesses, finally paid off

Bloggs on the other hand simply refused to learn the lesson. I'd been doing the same thing with him til last week since Easter! with absolutely no effect. So I gave up and bought him a Halti (which i affectionately call the Porti-Prison :D Problem solved! He really can't pull while he has it on - I would certainly recommend them for dogs who just won't learn! :luck:

:b Having same problem with Ozzy at the moment :- " seems to want to run everywhere! :sweating: even though we have been to training it all goes out the window when he gets outside

Would defo reccomend the Halti, make sure you get him used to wearing it. Building up the time he has it on before you walk him with it. Put it on him, give him a treat and take it off. Repeat this building up the time he has it on for in the house and the garden (supervised) I knew a dog trainer who had one particular dog that was impossible to train to walk to heel, the only thing that worked was the Halti. I think the size for a whippet is size 3. Good luck :luck:

the walk easy harness is fantastic , dosent annoy the dog as much as its not on there face , gentle pressure under the armpits and thats enough to stop them  ive found it very usefull for dogs who hate the halti or have the type of head that a halti dosent seem to fit properly :)

Without being rude .....I would really try to STOP the pulling through training than halti's, harnesses etc ......as they are a quick fix, but have to be used forever .......We had a pup back that I'd bred .....He was 11 months old and thought walking ment you ran from side to side on your back legs (w00t) ......It only took Vinnie 3-4 weeks to break a long habit .....He's now a joy to walk (well when he's not at racing lol) .....

Anybody tried the Canny Collar? Brilliant and doesn't rub their eyes like some Head Collars can as the lead is clipped behind the head. You can buy them on line from Canny Collar web site.

My experience only.

Halti!!!

Used with care and discretion!! :)

It's like walking a helium balloon!! :- "

All I have to do now is take it out of my pocket and show it to him!!

Can't recommend it enough!! :D

If a whippet needs size 3 its got a big head my greyhound has a size 3 and setter a size 2 I have size 2 for my boys and 1 for the girls. Not that they were them they just sit in the cupbord unless I really ned them

I would recommend the trail harness from TRPD. I haven't actually got one yet but I borrowed one from a friend on saturday and it really calmed Lenny down. He doesn't actually pull a lot anymore but I feel that its better for their necks to be in a harness - I'd just never found an escape proof one up until now!

They are made to measure and quite cheap. I am getting one in the comfort webbing which didn't rub at all.

I don't think of it as a quick fix, Lenny is such a nervous dog anyway and it seems the harness relaxes him so thats what he's getting! (don't laugh, but the one we borrowed was bright pink  he looked a right lady boy in it! - perhaps thats why he was so happy  ).
