I am trying to gather information from as wide a sphere as possible about premature unexplained deaths in whippets. To do this I need contacts all over the country. If you think you would like to help please email me so we can get underway. Unfortunately this won't go away if we close our eyes and ignore it.

Please help.

I will help all I can , but dont know of any Whippets dieing young , BTW how do you define `young` ?

I would say that "young" was any age before you could reasonably say that the dog had lived for a normal life expectancy. Certainly wouldn't expect to lose one of this breed before the age of eight would we?

Hoping to marshall some troops to try to reach the pet owners. We only get part of the picture when looking at showing, racing and coursing. Pet owners seem to be the forgotten masses. In the process of trying to put something on paper. Posters for local vets etc. Any help would be gratefully received.

Maybe if you are considering such a large audit project, a standard questionnaire may be useful? I don't know if an on-line form could be composed, but I'm sure you would get a greater feedback if this was done?

Would be interesting to see the results. Good luck :luck:

Incidently, there is some information on the net where whippet breeders where given a questionnaire to complete about incidences that occured in litters of whippet puppies e.g. cryptochrodism, cleft palate etc, I will try and find it this evening if your interested.

Yes please. Everything we find may help at least one little dog.

The questionaire is a good idea but I don't think too many would post a public reply. Perhaps if it could be sent by snail mail there may be a better chance.

How about contacting the breed secretarys and the breed council?

You could do a downloadable form that people can print off and fill in, and send to you snail

Thanks for the interest.

I am hoping to send all the info to the Breed Council before their next meeting if possible. Hopefully we can all pool our knowledge. Will try to get a form together (good idea) for people to download but can only reach a limited number (not all pet owners look at forums) via the internet. Thought posters etc could possibly get a few extra replies from those that don't show or race.

Any more ideas please?

I'll help aswell  ......We could always contact our vets and see if they could come up with some statistics .......It would also be a good idea to add Whippets on long term medication to the list for the Whippet club as not all AI dogs die early as we all know (just need blood test and medications tweaked very reguarly for life :( ).......and it would be very helpful if we could trace "AI problemed lines"....... getting a tad carried away now ......just hope the Whippet Club actually sit up and take notice, unlike the Greyhound Club did years ago when my show girl died at 4

I hope that no one in the vicinity of my office can hear me :- " , but amongst other boring things I run a reprographics department that would be happy to print your posters if you send them to me electronically with an address that you want them delivered to.

What a lovely offer. How about I post an outline poster on here so that we can all edit it and add or subtract to make it the best we can. As regards the questionaire shall we do the same thing to make sure everything is covered? Many heads are better than one

Also the vet idea is good. Perhaps we could drop a poster to the local vet (or any doggy clubs we know) together with a few questionaires. If it's not too much trouble we could collect any completed ones.

What do you all think?

It's no problem at all to print, and once it's completed I can send batches to anyone that is able to put them up (I also hold the postal budget :- " )

Here is the draft poster. How can it be improved? Help please.

Hi Everyone,

Silas has sent the file to me, and it looks very good. It is an A4 poster and I can print as many as needed. As I explained in a pm to Silas, I have a budget for "wastage" that is never fully utilised and so I am able to print these and send them in batches for her :- "

If anyone would like posters, please can you pm with your names and addresses and I will pop the amount that you specify in the post. I understand that this could be a worry to some because these are personal details, but I can assure you that once I have sent the package I will delete your personal detals. I can't think of another way of doing this, but if anyone has any suggestions, please speak up........

I look forward to receiving orders for this very worthwhile cause

Thanks for your support
