Mae is in season for the first time and bleeding quite a lot (started last Wednesday). I know that the length of time a bitch bleeds is on average 7 – 10 days but it can be for the entire 3 weeks :blink: . Are whippets prone to lengthy bleeding stages during a season or is it completely individual to the dog?

I am hoping at the moment that you tell me it passes fairly quickly and she should not be bleeding much by Christmas as we are over at my parents who have very pale carpets. If she is still heavy then all of the photos of her first Christmas will be with her in some really fetching pants :lol: :lol: (shouldn’t laugh really!!!). I don’t know, you wait 11 months for this then it starts at the most inconvenient time, got to love her :wub: :wub:

Bitches can vary but a season will/should last a full 3 weeks & upto 4 weeks. During this time a bitch can be receptive to males from 3 or 4 days until as late as 21(or longer) so the bitch must be kept away from males for all this time. The bleeding can slow up around 10/12 days which is when most folk think the bitch has finished...wrong....this is when most bitches are mate-able!

So you have at least 2 more weeks of bleeding yet.

Generally their first season is always the heaviest & the worst (altho there are always exceptions to the rule) subsequent seasons seem lighter & the bleeding doesn't seem to last so long.

 

I find it a really good idea to put some of the whippie knickers on them that you can put a panty liner in as it really saves your furniture & their bedding. :thumbsup:

 

I know Nicky12 on here used to make fab ones, not sure if she still does?

With Rosie (who was a rescue and at 17 months was said to have never had a season, which was probably true as she was so thin and generally immature) I bought supermarket toddler's knickers at a ridiculously cheap price of £5 for about 10 pairs, cut a hole out for her tail and used panty liners... cheap enough option just to bin them knowing that I would have her spayed at the right time... She bled quite heavily so I know what you are going through...

Gracie is spayed now but had two seasons and, from memory, I don't think there was much difference between the two of them. She wasn't terribly fussy about cleaning herself and I resorted to knickers which she absolutely hated and was adept at pinging them off in a matter of seconds. I used to find them all over the place....... nice! :wacko:

I had a bit of a bad night with her last night; I am hoping it is to do with being in season. I put her to bed as normal, downstairs in the dining room and within 5 minutes she was crying, jumping and scratching at the door. I left her for a few minutes to see if she would calm down and settle but there was no chance and for the first time I let her come upstairs and sleep with me. Probably the wrong thing to do as I really don't want her to sleep on my bed but I couldn't let her disturb the neighbours all night or damage my brand new doors. I will try the normal routine again tonight and hope for the best, I am planning on getting her spayed so at least we should only have to go through this the once.

maybe you could train her to sleep in a crate in your bedroom?
