Have just had a notice posted to me by the Secretary of the Whippet Club of Queensland advising of whippets rescued over the weekend. 31st MARCH 2008

URGENT MESSAGE TO ALL MEMBERS.

Dear Members,

We have had an incident occur which every Breed Club dreads, we have had to rescue some Whippets over the weekend, not just one or two but a total of FIFTEEN, some old, some young and a litter of three puppies…………. I myself have not seen the dogs but believe they are not in bad shape although the seven we have to get out of the Animal shelter have a few sores etc.,

We do not know the full story yet as to why or how this has happened, our main concern is to have the dogs thoroughly checked out by a Veterinary Surgeon, tested for Heartworm, wormed, vaccinated and before placing in new homes they will need to be desexed. We will also have the expense of feeding the dogs and the puppies and to this extent we will need a little help ………….

As you know we are a young Club, just getting under way and so we are asking for help with a donation however small to assist us to get these Whippets ready to be re-housed and live happy and healthy lives. This notice also serves to let you know that we will have these dogs wanting new homes so if you know of anyone waiting for a dog or maybe would like a companion for the Whippet they already may have.

We would really appreciate any donation you can spare, and therefore I thank you in advance for any help you can give.

Sincerely,

Maree McKenzie

Secretary,

Whippet Club of Queensland.

Just a little update,

A couple of the whippets have found new homes due to support from members. Testing for heartworm and health check are being conducted over the next few days on remaining whippies. All are being desexed before going to new homes.

The whippets that are held at the shelter are not in a bad way as first reported with only one looking a little thin. They are going to remain at the shelter as they seem quite comfortable until homes can be found for them. Testing and desexing will be conducted over the next few days.

Again if you know of a suitable home for one of these whippets or can help in any other way please contact the club and let them know the details. All these whippets are in the Brisbane area.

A quick update on the rescue as it stands.

Of the 5 that came home to our place, 2 have new homes and have settled in really well.

Piffy, the 7 month old bitch has enjoyed sleeping in her new owners bedroom, going for walks to pick up the children from school, and being fussed over and spoilt. Lara was desexed, microchipped, heartworm tested, etc etc and went off to her new home to a family of real whippet lovers. They are stoked to have a whippet back in their lives.

Leafy, the 4 year old boy, has been desexed, microchipped etc and is off to his new foster home tonight with a whippet family whose bitch is really misssing having acompanion after the lost their last whippet a few weeks or so ago. We have a chance of a very good home for Dusty a mahogany brindle 3 yr old bitch who was also desexed, microchipped tested etc...

I'm still trying to find a home for Angel the 6 year old girl who was debarked sometime in the past. She's very outgoing and full of energy. She'll be desexed and microchipped once we can line a home up for her.

The 3 baby bitches are being raised by a friend of our club. 2 have homes lined up with a good chance for the 3rd. All 3 will be desexed once they turn 6 months of age.

The 7 in the Animal shelter are being well cared for and are coping really well. The Animal Wefare League are very confident of finding good homes for all of them, but may need some help. All will be desexed and microchipped and are to be sold for $150.

So all in all nearly 1 week after we're travelling as well as can be expected. Thanks to those who have offered help, either in practical ways of financially. We will still need assitance and home to see the ones in the shelter out asap. Any donations to help with costs would be really appreciated.

I know vets get a bad rap on here- and deservedly so- from time to time, but ours has been fantastic. Significantly reduced fees, and a bucked load of free shampoo, flea/tick/worming protection donated. It all helps.

Great to hear the update - you have done an awesome job

An update from Gary and Jo Austin (Whippet Rescue co-ordinator) 08/04/08

Hi Folks

Things are travelling pretty well at the moment. Here's the latest update.

Angel, our 6 yr old debarked girl now has a home-very happy about this as was worried. She's being desexed and microchipped this morning and I'm putting her on a plane to Melb on Fri morning. She's really full on and needed a very active home and another whippet- she's got both. Emma, her new owner lives in the Dandenong ranges, has the dogs inside, goes for very long walks, works from home, and takes her dog to the local golf club for a hoon every afternoon where she usually catches at least 2 rabbits!!! Perfect for Angel.

We still have Dusty here- she's very sweet, loves being inside etc Have a potential home lined up if the lady can organise transport to mid coast NSW. Have given her the details of a dog carrier.

A visit to the shelter yesterday. There are 4 still there but are all happily sharing a pen. Licky, the 10 yr old is still there. Waiting on the AWL to get back to me with an update on these guys.

Had a call from a lady in nsw yesterday who has a vet nurse who has apparently made lots of calls and found us a few new homes. Waiting to hear more but could be a help for the shelter ones.

Member who visited the shelter is concerned that the 4 there would be cold at night without coats. I told her that I'd ask around for any spare coats and maybe take a run down there on Friday if I have time. Could any of you bring along a spare coat or 2 to Toowoomba Royal tomorrow (if you're going there) and I'll collect them. Ta.

The babies all have homes thanks to their dedicated foster mum.

Regards

Gary and Jo.

Just a little note of thank you to all those that have donated their time, money and effort in the rescue and housing of all these whippets so far. The support has been tremendous not only in Queensland but other states as well. :)
