Hi all.

As you know I (GemmaT) procured a new whippet a few weeks ago in the shape of a lovely boy called Casper. I added him to my angelic o:) (sometimes!) Pimms.

I have always been prone to exzema ( is that how you spell it!?!) and in the past few months have had a few odd patches. In the past two weeks it has got dramatically worse  , I am sitting at my desk stinging as I write this..... ! I have a massive rash (sorry sounds horrid) on my legs, under my arms and on my arms. Its really red, sore, and dry. It is so itchy that I will literally scratch till it bleeds  .

Anyhow, I have worked out that it has only got a lot worse since the arrival of Casper.....

I was wondering if it would be possible to react to him and not Pimms? Pimms has a very soft coat, hardly any moulting, and no doggy 'smell'. Cass on the other hand has a much rouger coat (more manly!), moults a bit more, and has a defiante more doggy smell. He dosnt have any skin allergies/mites and has been bathed since I got him.

What I have are apparently the symptoms of an allergic reaction.....does anyone else have this with male whips?

Help! Im so itchy, hardly sleeping, and not sure what to do...... .

Thanks all

GemmaT

You sound in a bad way young lady, first of all i would get yourself off to the doctors, it isnt going to go away is it, sounds to me like a reaction to one of your dogs, is there any chance of being isolated from them for a while see how you go on :luck:

aww poor you :huggles: get down the doctors girl hel soon sort ya out :huggles:

Poor you! Sounds terrible :(

A few months ago, another K9 member was kind enough to pass me some information on pet owner allergies for FAQ. There's a lot of stuff you might find particularly useful in your situation. Perhaps have a read. The link is here: FAQ Allergies

Hope you soon feel better. It's horrible if it's bad enough to be waking you at night :(

My eczema flared up again just after I got my male puppy Merlin and I still have it 7 weeks down the line. Not sure if it was an allergic reaction or the stress of his arrival. Although I love him dearly he is the first dog i've ever had and it was all a bit of a shock to the system as he turned our lives and house upsidedown. :D

Stress related? might be ... I only get eczema when I am stressed.

Oats in a bath are good put them in a net and run the water through them, helps eczema and the itching, its very soothing, i wondered to if the stress of getting another whippie, may be has caused the flare up, maybe you were worrying a bit about how they would both get on together?

Also Diprobase is brilliant you can get it over the counter at most chemists. rally soothing and you can wash in it too.

I know how itchy it is!! i have it inbetween all my fingers!!

Hope you feel better soon

I've got 3 dogs (still keep bloody typing 4 dogs, then having to change it :( ) and I don't generally suffer from animal allergies, but I have met individual dogs that I've had reactions to - I worked at a rescue kennels at weekends last year and definately came across the odd one here and there.

but I'm sure that it will settle down in time :luck: - good advice for dealing with symptoms on here

Hi GemmaT, My OH suffers from allergies and sometimes his skin would flare up for what we believed was no reason but we have tracked it down to any time we get a new animal. When we got a new horse a few years ago his itching went off the scale but it settled back down again after a while when his body became used to the horse. And it is exactly the same with any new dogs too,his excema flares up really bad especially on his lower legs and fingers,he uses diprobase and oilatum and anti alllergy tabs, boots own brand are very good and cheap too!! :)

I hope it clears up soon, and I know it's futile to say this..........but try not to scratch it!!

i too am allergic to cats dogs and horses and yep i have all 3!!!!! :- "

but i have found that i do build up a type of immunity to my own animals after a period of time but will react badly to new pets, however i keep my nasal symptoms down with flixonase spray and antihistamine tablet, there are some very effective natural remedies out there too so could be worth a trip to the local health shop?

hope this is of some help to you

I'm allergic to furry animals. They set me off sneezing and wheezing and dogs licking me makes me itch. If I take my antihystimaines (spl?) I'm grand.

I find with my own (past and present) pets I build up an imunity to them. I don't need to take the tablets now for Wills being around. But if I go to the vets, or to someone else's house with a pet, I'm sneezing away again.

I'd guess it's jsut a case of you need ing to build up immunity to your new dog. But in the mean time - get off to a Dr to get sorted out. Yor symptoms sound unbearable!!

I've just added some really informative new links to the Allergy topic in FAQ if any of you sufferers want to take a look. Hopefully there might be some help there for you, or at least some interesting reading about new research etc

Thanks so much for all the helpful advice people :huggles: .

I went to the docs, have some cream to use, my main problem is that I am really sensitive so cant use E45/Vaseline/Oilatum...the new doctor looked a bit flummoxed when I told her this.....

Im pretty sure its an allergic reaction to Cass, poor boy. Perhaps I am a bit stressed about it, Pimms is right mid season and he is really unsettled because of this and also due to being a new boy. Will post more about him in another post....

Oats in bath, I like the idea of that, never heard before.... :D .

Thanks everyone, hopefully this post will be of use to others.
