First the confession: the other day I called my cocker spaniel stupid. I threw a stone into Lake Windermere- and without being asked in he went, searched with both his paws and then by ducking his whole head under and finally came out with- a stone. Because we were being watched by other people I made a fuss of him but said, "Wrong stone, stupid!" which it was. Everyone laughed. Glad they walked off before hearing my profuse apologies to him. It got me thinking though. Current research suggests dogs are smarter than virtually any other animal. Their short term memory is a couple of minutes. Compare that with a chimps' (our closest animal relative) of only 22 seconds. Dogs rule in my world. (And I'm still trying to make it up to him.)
