Hi everybody,

We have been to another Lurcher show today, which charged£2.00 to show your dog.I think with the cost of fuel, entrance fees going up,and now £2.00 in the ring, the small Lurcher shows will become a thing of the past.I heard people saying they would not show all there dogs,as it makes it an expensive day out. What a shame,as its great to meet up with mates and have a laugh.I wondered what other peoples opinion is.

personally i dont mind the cost of the entry/class fees, the thing that bothers me is the larger "game fair" type of shows that charge "exhibitors" to enter the shows when a part of what we are doing is the reason people come to watchand attend teh show for some entertainment.

ie - selby game fair price is ridiculous! :(

If Im showing my horses i dont get charged to enter the ground so why charge when u r showing dogs?

i dont mind the £2 fee personally (as long as a huge entrance fee isnt charged on the gate); the show organisers put in a lot of hard work for very little and i honestly think the rosettes/prizes far out weight the fee, again with the horses the fees are now £7 + for a tiny rubbish rosette.

I agree with what you say about being an exibitor,we were saying that today.I feel for people who have several dogs. One of my friends has 5 dogs, the other 6.At £2 each dog,it all adds up.I have soken to a few people today about the subject,ad the general opinion is that the £2 puts people off .

Be grateful. (w00t) The cost of a champ show entry for KC dogs is about £23

Hi Amanda,

I don't think there's any need to be charged £2.00 a time.

At the end of the day, it's us taking our lurchers/terriers/ferrets/horses etc to these places and putting on a show (especially at Game Fair) that attract the general public.

Big fairs like Chatsworth are a complete rip off. We have to pay £15.00 each and because of racing and showing our dogs we don't even get to look around the rest of the show.

What does annoy me is, like today at Papplewick, only one dog entered one of the classes, they were quite happy to take the lady's money and all they did was shove a red rossette in her hand. OK, she was the only one there, but if a judge is prepared to take your money they could at least have the decency to look the dog over properly etc as they would any other class.

Anyway, rant over.

Hi Deb,

Yes,i felt for the lady in question. She is quite new to the world of Lurcher showing, she felt let down,as she wanted to have her dog looked over,as that was what she went in the ring for.I just hope it does,nt put her off.

Hi Everyone. As the Lady in question i did feel let down. For the Judge to take my £2 and just put the rosett in my hand with out looking at my dog. I would have liked my dog looking at as it was a puppy class and it would have been good experience for him . I was allso showing my ferrets and can say this would not have happend at a ferert show. It has not put me of showing my dogs . Pam.

Ahh Pam!!

We kept your name out of it,but i am pleased you feel you want to carry on showing Cody. Most shows are friendly and the judges professional and curtious, but it,s a shame you were let down.We will cheer you on at the next show.

I think the ferret people could teach some Lurcher folk how to enjoy your hobby and support each other. No wonder Debs comes to sit with you lot.Lol.

We were there today too, we were quite surprised that it was £2 per dog - we've always paid a £1 before. It does add up when you have a few dogs to show, we didn't show one of ours as we had'nt enough money!! loo. But i suppose everything is going up - i'm not sure how these things are run but maybe the owner of the land put up there fee??

It was a good day out either way!! :)

Hi,

I think you were not the only ones caught out!!I dont think it,s anything to do with the land,it,s just something that snowballs. There are still not many that charge £2,and i hope that continues. Not many things go up100%,thank goodness.People should be made aware in the advertiseing, then you can make the choice weather to go or not.If i had known,i personally, would not have gone.I would be a bit more selective where i went.Of coarse, that i just my opinion.

I am glad you had a good day though!!

Would have loved to have gone today, but was too busy with the horses :( See where your all coming from, but it was a £1 in some show rings 10 yrs ago.i'm sure rosettes and trophies have gone up since then.Maybe where the organizers have gone wrong,is waiting 10 yrs and then putting 100% increase on.Would have been better to increase earlier and by a smaller amount. ie 25p every couple of yrs. That way folk perhaps would accept the increase a liitle more easily. As for not judging a dog when it is the only one in the ring 'disgraceful' :( Glad it hasn't put you off Pam :)

And Driffield Champ Show is £23 entry PLUS £5 car park.

I think it is just milking the exhibitors to charge car park as well.

Was going to say the same thing, it was a quid ages ago, and why not pay £2, provided you havnt had to pay a fortune to get in the show in the first place. Most places nowadays give good trophies, and i wonder how they affoer it, so £2 a throw, no problem.

The agility shows I go to charge around £2.40 per entry per class. I have 2 dogs & usually enter 10 classes over a weekend. Then there is the £15 camping fee. Then there is fuel/food/drink over the weekend. And if you're lucky you get a rosette

I've never dared to add up how much it costs over the year (w00t)

For the last couple of years we have competed at Chatsworth, it's part of the entertainment for the public too, with a commentary for each dog. It costs £7.50 to enter 4 classes & you get free entry into the show for the day. Bargain :)

Hi J.T

You're obviously one of the lucky ones at Chatsworth. I don't mind paying to entering my dogs in the ring or racing. I've got 5 dogs that all show and race and it's lovely to watch then and usually a great day out with your mates. But I do begrudge having to pay the entrance price at Chatsworth when I never get to see the rest of the show.

My daughter loves to watches the various horse events, but they're so far away and she's only 9 I can't let her go by herself and I don't get the time to take her myself.

I appreicate that everything has to go up, but first it should be advertised properly and I don't think that many people expect to pay more than a pound at a small show in a field with nothing else there (i.e. foods vans/stalls etc).

Again, this is just my opinion.

Pam, i'm glad you've not been put off - I was disgusted at the way the judge treated you. I would like to say thanks to you and the other "fereters" if there's such a word for making a "novice" in the world of ferrets feel very welome.

I think £2.00 is a bit too much, especailly when folks do have quite a few lurchers or terriers. We like to try and keep it to a £1.00,i,ve notice even some family dogs are charging between £1.50-£2.00 per class.I think theres differents ways to look at this compare to the KC's shows.

Hi,

Again,i think if the facilities are good, drink and food stands etc, people will not moan too much. However, not even a black bag around the ring, for rubbish and pooh.Even the kids paid £2.00,and at most shows i go to,the kids get a trophy, but i did,nt see one yesterday. We paid a £1.00 last week at market Bosworth, and the trophys were amazing.Even the rosettes were fantastic quality, with plastic backs. So,i do think that some do rip us off.
