:) RIGHT I KNOW ITS BEEN ASKED WHY WHIPPETS AND NOT GREYHOUNDS, BUT WHAT I WANT TO KNOW IS WHY WHIPPETS IN THE FIRST PLACE? WHY DID U GET INTO IT? MY SITUATION WAS PETER WANTED A WHIPPET (personally I thought they were skinny little things, how wrong was I?) ORIGINALLY ZIGGY WAS BOUGHT AS A PET THEN WE HEARD OF BIGGES MAINE WRC AT WALLSEND SO WE WENT ALONG AND THE REST AS THEY SAY IS HISTORY. WEVE NOW GOT 4 AND I HAVE FORGOT WHAT I USED TO DO BEFORE I WENT WHIPPET RACING. SO COME ON HOW ABOUT THE REST OF U WHAT GOT U INTO WHIPPET RACING AND WHAT DID U DO BEFORE? LOL

I'd always loved whippets...and around 2 years ago I started looking for a pedigree whippet...However I was unable to find one, but was put in touch with Sheila who found me Rory (Red Reign), I never imagined racing dogs, but when I see the excitement on the faces, and the anticipation that they have at the track, I cannot think of a better breed. Not only are the fantastic house dogs, but they get to enjoy themselves too at the the track...

When I see other lovely dogs that are bored and overweight over the park it makes me pleased to have a dog that is fit, happy and contented, and non-ped racing whippets are generally all the same...marvelous, happy dogs..

AS A CHILD MY FATHER AND HIS BROTHERS ALWAYS HAD GREYHOUNDS, SO WAS BROUGHT UP AROUND THE DOG TRACKS , WHEN I WAS ABOUT 12 MY DAD BOUGHT ME MY FIRST WHIPPET FOR A BIRTHDAY PRESENT , IT STARTED THEN.

the first year me and tony were together he bought me a lurcher (still got him now....he's 13), he then met graham (vickys grandad) out walking the whippets and they were talking about grahams bitch trixie who was due pups to dream vision and tony asked if we could have one....and we got pippa(blue monday) off graham, . since then we've added few more whips to our house. :D

:D A MATE OF MINE USED TO HAVE WHIPPETS AND CLUB RACE AT WEST AUCKLAND W.R.C. , HE WOULD ALLWAYS BE ASKING ME TO GO AND WATCH THE RACING ON A SUNDAY MORNING THAT WAS BACK IN 1973 AFTER EVENTUALLY AGREEING TO GO I GOT HOOKED AND ENDED UP GETTING A DOG, THE BEST THING I EVER DID KEEPS ME OUT OF THE CLUB

Steve sold his business after health problems and we needed a focus, something that the whole family could do together at weekends.

Steve got a whippet to walk after his op. and Harry only 6 years old at the time pestered for us to race it as he knew that his dad had raced whippets in the past.

Steve had always had whippets with his mum and dad-excellent, intelligent and loving animals (the whippets, not Steve and family)

My first experience with a similar breed was when we took in an old lurcher-Jess. She was marvellous, we had her for 3 years and then she finally had to be put to sleep. It was having Jess that made me realise that our next dog-a whippet would be ideal and she was.

When I first took Jess, our lurcher out for a walk one evening-I naively rushed back home to Steve to report that our new dog had been chasing rabbits! and I hadn't even told her to!

Obviously I knew nothing of the breed, but from then I was hooked and found it all very fascinating. I even made Steve come along to the graveyard with me where it was wick with rabbits to show him what she could do.

He wasn't as fascinated :- "

started with lurcher at around 10year old, then moved onto greyhounds at 16 and raced them then moved onto whippets nearly 14 years ago when my wife pestered the life out of me for 1?, 13 1/2 years later we have 9 whippets!

Hmmm ... We had been invited up to the Scottish Derby in 2001 to watch Pleasure Shared race, it was our holiday for the year instead of going to the sea-side like we usually did. Mum got talking to a lovely couple Miles and Rose O'Brien who said they were putting their dog Selim Cool to their friends whippet bitch. Mum saw Connor and immediately fell in love, she said she'd have a pup. In September we got a call to say the bitch had 1 white bitch and 2 brindle dogs (one the late Connors Lad) and the bitch was ours. Miles took the bitch for us until we could collect it, she was collected at 10 weeks old when Dennis Ward went to get Paradise Pleasure and Eric took Connors Lad. She had her first slip at 6mths old (the date which I count from as to say how long we have raced) and we enjoyed running her ever since even though she isn't a world beater. Our 2nd pup we got in Feb 2003. I'm sure more will be coming soon  .

My dad and brother had a whippet pet and mated it to Rita & Ray Youngs Double Barrel their was a small bitch left out of the litter so i said i would have it but it had to stay at my mums as i had three small children. The first time i went to see them race i could not believe the noise they made i said no way will i have one of them starving barking things in my house. But i started to take cindy over to Winlaton on a Sunday morning. Thats over thirty years ago and im still racing with 4 whippets in my home soon changed my mind about whippets they are the must lovin dogs i have ever met and they do keep you fit and young . WOODY

My sister started to race whippet's in 1982 and she told me to come and watch them run, so one weekend I went along to Polbeth WRC to watch her dog run. I liked it but was working on the farm and I also did Karate so I never had much spare time to own a whippet. Over a few month's I was at the track watching the dog's race (starting work very early so I could go) and running my sister to some open's. After about 18 month's I bought my first whippet but she ran over glass and cut her tendon's very badly after only 6 week's of getting her so she never ran but at the end of the club racing year one member was going out of racing and he gave me his little bitch ( Fancy Whisky). I started the next year racing her and still going.

Gone all nostalgic now!

I didn't really have no choice in the matter, was brought up with them (wouldn't swap them for the world though), my grandad used to take me racing to Burnley & St Helens, then later to Westhoughton & Lancaster. Andy Aspinall used to let me run his little club bitch & a few years later me & another girl ran Milligram for him at opens. The little bitch was about 17lb & blue with white trim, gorgeous! The first bitch of my own had to be exactly the same and she was but 10lb heavier  Milligram could never have pups so had got a bitch off Brooklyn (litter sister) thats probably why i go on about any cheeky ann offspring so much :))
