Wirehaired Whippet Or Lurcher?

GOTA BE LURCHERS ..NO? WHAT A CRACKER LOOKING PUP ON THE TABLE THO !! (w00t)

JOHN

Sorry abit late catching this topic.

Broken coated whippets were not unusual in the 20s and 30s, due to terrier blood to reintroduce abit of vim and zest in a flagging breed. One of the dogs shown looks like a typical beddy/whippet that wouldn't be out of place at any lurcher show.

I for one won't be looking for an "Apalachian Greyhound. Let's not be too critical of our american cousins, they are always trying to reinvent the wheel.

Unusual breed seems to abound in the Apalachian mountains, wasn't the film "Deliverance" set there?

Wire-haired whippets are often mentioned as a distinct breed in old dog books.

what ever their breeding the first one on the site is a fine looking dog

That said I'd just called it a lurcher :p

Looks like a lurcher to me.

Me too. I reckon it's a Lurcher.

I saw 2 beautiful fawn Lurchers (brother & sister), both very elderly going into the stables at Buckingham Palace with their owner a few years back. They were absolutely gorgeous. Made we want to bring one home to Ozzieland.

Cheers - Sued

is that you macha who was in scotland last year?hope you are keeping ok.

>It'll be a cross bred somewhere along the line. Trouble is, the yanks cant leave >things alone, can they. They have to muck up dog breeding, cos they cant hunt >anything, it doesnt matter if the dogs have things bred out of them.

I don't know anything about the Claybrook dogs, but where did you get the idea that Yanks can't hunt anything?

When I came to the US some years ago, I was amazed at the amount of hunting of all types, guns, bows ,hawks, hounds, longdogs, terriers etc , not to mention the number of game animals and birds available to everyone, not just a privilaged few.

Vast public lands as well as private land open to all. It's really a hunters paradise. Of course like many other parts of the World, hunting is under attack by the antis. AND they are slowly winning!

obviously a lurcher - in my oh-so-experienced opinion

very nice looking dog it is too
