Hi peeps,

this may be a stupid question but i'm curious... Is there a difference between working stock and show stock as pets if you just have them as pets and don't work or show them right from being a pup.

Hope this makes sense :b

Also are there any major personality differences between dogs and bitches? Haha well, apart from the obvious :- "

Love Emma xxx

Hi Emma,

As we only have show bred whippets, I can't comment on the difference between the 'types' as pets.

However, I can tell you a bit about the differences between dogs and bitches. We have 3 entire males and 2 bitches. I think that most people will agree that their dogs are more loyal and affectionate, they will follow you everywhere - you'll always have a friend when you go to the loo!! The girls still love a cuddle but they are generally more independent. For example our girls stay with our parents when in season, they love it there and don't seem to care that they're not at home. The boys on the other hand would be distraught. Frankie in particular is such a Mummy's boy and only has eyes for Jo.

The other obvious difference is size. Our girls are significantly smaller than the boys - although all of them still come on our knees for cuddles. And of course, you do have the issue of seasons with the bitches.

I think if I were to just have the one as a pet I would go for a dog. Which ever you choose they are wonderful. :huggles:

hi ther emma ,i have a working breed dog called blue and he is the most gentle dog iv ever know and is so loving and laid back and will do anything for me ,now i also have a show breed bitch tia who is a right demanding little begger very vocal

and bossy but when out around large numbers of people and dogs she becomes very quiet and unshure without her pack as back up  then thers ollie im not shure what he was breed for im think maybe because of his size he was breed for raceing maybe and he is in a world of his own right fiesty little man he is can be quiet agresive at times with other dogs (i dont mean bitting) but very yappy and intimadating to other dogs when out with my pack ,now then theres my poppy again not shure what she was breed to do but may as she very little im thinking racing and she is the cheekest madam of all very vocal and bossy and very naughty :- " all my dogs are pets ,i think given the choice if i could only have all dogs or all bitches i would have to say dogs only because ya get a quieter life with them ,ther not so demanding as bitches i dont think

I have a show bred bitch and boy is she :- " she is independant and wayward but as time has gone by she has settled and is quite lovely now ( as long as she gets her own way). But I wouldn't change her for the world

I also have a race bred dog who is an absolute dream to own, he is placid and laid back at home and a little cracker on the track o:)

Both are lovely in there own way, Daisy loves a cuddle as much as Moz does, but in the future I am sticking with boys :D

I've got a girl and she is the most loving, soppy date you could ever meet - she also follows me everywhere and wants to always be with me, but is also happy to be left when I'm out...never had a boy whippet though...couldn't be anymore attached than she is though :D

We are not too sure what background ours comes from as she isn't KC registered, it could be working as she is larger than racing whippets. She is a dream to have around the house, clean, quiet, loves it when people visit so she can sit up on the couch besides them, loves coming everywhere with us. We've not had a male dog before so can't compare. She is also loyal when out and about she always looks to see we are still there. Also she is an only dog I don't know if this makes a difference to how they act.

We've got one of each and they both have completely different personalities, however they are both different sexes too!

Lenny is more loyal and loving but also slightly bonkers - he is show bred and a right little mummys boy

Molly is independant, calm and mature (most of the time!) but although she seems to love us very much she would run off with any of the owners from her training class without a second thought  - she is racing bred.

 That's exactly the same as our girls!!

They do love us very much but would be quite happy to love everyone else too

i have got no really clue about this but when we were looking we found that show dog/bitches are slightly bigger in size than racing (not sure about working though)

and we were told that there feet are different and the show bread wont be able to run aswell or round corners as fast

weather or not this is thruth or rubbish i dont know but this is some of the things i was told from different breeders,

also when we were looking the price of a show bread was roughly £100 more than the price of a racing bread. but i suppose it all depends on the breeder and the lines :b

Charming aren't they?

She looks straight into their eyes as if to say 'Please take me away from this evil witch, she doesn't feed me'

My 2 boys are very laid back and one is distinctly more affectionate than the other. But it is Miss Peggy-Sue that follows me everywhere, if I am having a bath she checks on me every few minutes - she cuddles up with me on the sofa most nights - she is more bossy though and likes her own way :- " However she is much more 'gobby' than the boys, she also doesn't like it when I leave her very much.

Overall I'd go for a dog as a pet.

One of my boys is half coursing lines, he is very laid back however is incredibly keen to chase and hunt anything - he has on a couple of occasions quite a few years ago actually disappeared for hours whilst on a scent. If they are working bred the reason the breeders have bred fromthem is because they are such good workers and therefore this will probably be the same in their offspring, whereas show whippets are bred for their physical attributes and closeness to the breed standard. I wouldn't buy a working bred whippet if it isn't to be worked personally.

So what is Ruby and Stars background? Oh they are so pretty

I have two bitches - one is a racing bred girl and the other is show bred.

Of the two, the show bred girl we say has 'all beauty and no brains' :teehee: !! She is lovely but much more loopy and has been harder to train than our racing bred girl.

Our racing girl is really clever, smart, vocal, and well behaved. o:)

I've never really thought about it in these terms of racing vs show breeding. There was a £200 price difference though!

I have had a male in the past and he was gorgeous too... don't know what I'd do if I was choosing again now.

Mine are all show bred but I have 4 dogs one is castrated and 4 bitches 2 of which I bred myself

The dogs are all mummies boys or in the case of Jasper daddies boy they always want to sit on your knee.Of the girls Tegan is miss independant.Rosie and Angel we bred so are both quite loving as they have always been with us.Fryja on the other hand came to us in January at 3 years old and is a definite mummies girl she always wants to sit on my knee.

Will add the 2 greyhounds are the same Button a racer is very laid back and independant William a show bred is a mummies boy and a mard arse wanting attention and fuss al the time

Aww thanks so much for all your replies, really interesting. I suppose they are all little individuals though :)

It's been lovely to hear about all your babies, i'm so excited about getting one of my own  Just want to make sure I find out all I can so I can be a good mummy :)) You have all been so helpful, thankyou  No doubt I will think of more questions for you all lol.

So are you thinking of racing them or doing lure coursing at all?

Lol I have a cat who looks just like your little black one, is it Spoon? I hope my whippet (when I get one) gets on with her
