As for the various 'collie women' ...I really think they are insane
I'm glad it's not just me then. I really do wonder about people who think like this but choose to walk in one of the most popular dog walking spots for miles around where they are bound to keep having problems. Never a problem with local people, a few have dogs that are nervous or slightly problematic with other dogs, but they generally explain if there is a problem. I really don't feel those of us with nice, friendly and well-socialised dogs should feel upset because of behavioural pathologies of, quite frankly, abnormal people. Also I could never think my dog was 'guaranteed to let me down', rather the opposite but then I probably don't have unrealistic expectations.

Interestingly the vet confirmed our hypothesis that you can have male 'seasons', he does have definite high peaks in testosterone in Spring and late summer, and yes it can affect behaviour.

 I thought of that in the night. That is what we are going to do this morning and see how things go.

Good luck :luck: , hope all goes well.

I sympathise as i am having a similar problem with Ellie at the moment. She is 10 months now & i have only recently started letting her off the lead.

I did try once when she was about 6 months, i let her off & she seemed fine for about 10 minutes but then all of a sudden for no reason just bolted off at top speed. I nearly had a heart attack shouting & calling her back but she was totally deaf. She did finally stop & i ran in the other direction & thankfully she chased me & i finally managed to catch her. I said to myself NEVER again  .

Since then i have tried teaching her at home out in the garden, throwing her favourite toy & getting her to bring it back & then really praising her. All was going really well so about a month ago i tried again letting her off over the fields & playing with her toy & she has been fine. I also bought a whistle which she has got used to & take her with one of the IG's who has a run with her & is excellent at coming straight back when called.

This has been going fine until a few days ago when she started being a bit naughty & not coming back when called & this morning was the worst. She had had a good run round & played with the toy but when i wanted to put her back on the lead she wasn't having any of it. Half an hour it took me to finally catch her, she would hare off, come back & stand just in front of me & just as i reached out for her collar would dart off again.

I tried blowing the whistle, calling her nicely & playing but that didn't work, i tried being a bit sterner but that was useless, there was me on my hands & knees in the middle of the field desperately trying to get her to come to me & she thought the whole thing a joke.

The worst is its no good offering her titbits of any kind as she is totally uninterested in food or treats at all.

It worries the hell out of me, because i think if there was danger close by you would not have a hope in hell of getting hold of her in time or she might bolt towards a road?

From tomorrow she is back on the lead again until i can figure out how to get her to come back :(

Have you tried hiding from her? I have had to do this once or twice. I do it in a very safe place where there is only one way out.
