Unfortunately as said it can be a gamble.
I looked at what i could afford and what illnesses they would be prone to, fortunately lurchers, greyhound, whippets and sight hounds in general are not bad for illnesses but common problems are injuries.
Having supervised playtime and exercise with not too many distractions would hopefully minimize these.

How common is it for vet bills to run in to the thousands?

Not uncommon to be in four figures for ongoing conditions, or if your dog falls ill on a weekend or holiday and you need to use an emergency vet.

They rack up incredibly fast. Harri was really really ill a couple of days after I gave him Bravecto, an initial consultation + blood tests was over £160. Further blood tests by a specialist external lab as the first results were so dire and a needle aspiration under sedation took me into 4 figures this year. He was referred to the vet hospital but luckily he started to recover spontaneously ( confirmed by yet more expensive blood tests, repeated twice, a week apart, to be sure) so we cancelled the referral or the bill would have been much much worse.

He's barely 13 months old and I've already claimed nearly 5 years worth of premiums in this one incident.

I found Petplan and the kennel club the best options for me. Although both were within the top 5 dearest.... And I finally bit the bullet and went with Petplan today after going through all the fine detail. My reason is, I’m thinking long term and god for bid I hope my little man never develops a medical condition which may require long time or lifetime treatment, but I’d rather have the cover in place now, just in case, than risk not being able to get the condition covered. I can also manage to pay the monthly direct debit and any excess, but we’d struggle to pay out a large lump sum..... so for me it’s security and peace of mind. I pay house insurance etc, but hope I’ll never actually need it. Unfortunately I’m not a gambler, I’m a planner and like security and feel relieved that I finally made the decision...... if the NHS wasn’t around, I’d 100% pay for decent medical insurance for my son, to ensure we could afford the best treatment, so I’ve applied the same logic to my fur baby
