I have just received a notification from our vet practice.
It mentions a new yearly injection against fleas and ticks.
I do not use monthly chemicals on our dogs but will sometimes use one off treatments prescribed by the vet to sort out persistent outbreaks.
I just wonder if anyone has used the yearly injection treatment (I have not yet discovered which product it is) but will ask more on Tuesday as we have an appointment with our old lady "Hazel" who has a possible canine tooth problem!
Has anyone used this treatment and how effective have you found it to be ?
Chemicals, "ARRRGH" !!!!!!!!

I've not heard of this, but I think my questions would be around how strong it is at the start of the year, and how weak it is at the end. I don't understand how things like this work so it may be nothing to be concerned about, but that's the way my mind works.

I will definitely ask questions on Tuesday about the product and your comment about it's strength at beginning and end of the years treatment too.
I also wonder about side affects. I worry that this is an injection to last a whole year, unlike a pill to pop or a short term spray or a monthly spot on ( which don't have to be continued for any length of time! )

I'd want to know if a parasite actually has to bite the dog to be affected by the drug.

Great point. To be clear for anyone reading in future, what if your dog has a bad reaction, is there an antidote type of thing?

Oh excellent Hemlock, I will ask the vet that one. Thank you.

I will have to write myself a list for my vet.

We have had complete sucess on our two girls with a product from AniForte called Tick Shield. No doubt it is not for everyone and it possibly won’t cope with every circumstance but we live in the count and walk the girls daily in grasslands and riverbanks.

Ticks are not our problem, they can be easily removed, it is the occasional outbreak of persistent fleas that are a nuisance.
I have spoken to our vet about the 1 year treatment and our vet reports that it appears to be quiet reliable.
He agrees that once it is administered it will work for the year but there is no way of stopping it or turning it off, until its effect wears out at about 1 year.
He has suggested though, that as we do not use regular / monthly chemicals on our dogs, that we should continue as we are and only treat the little blighters when we have outbreaks and he sees no need to use monthly chemicals if there is nothing to treat !

So far this year I have treated the girls twice only with "Advocate" spot on for fleas.

I’m sorry I didn’t really make myself clear. The Tick Shield keeps our whippets completely free of fleas and ticks and has done for two plus years. The biggest bonus being that it is completely natural with no harsh chemicals, I seem to recall it is something like b vitamins but not sure. I’m away from hom presently so I can’t check.

We found an electric (battery operated) flea comb, which is very satisfying to use and non-toxic. Probably wouldn't work on a long-coated dog but brilliant on our rough-coated lurchers and thick-coated terriers. Dogs would lie on their backs and enjoy the grooming.

Mmm, that's a good idea, do you think it would work on our Cockers. None are spayed and all have silky coats just a couple have more protection on their legs.

Worth a try - not very expensive so no great loss if it doesn't work.
