A friend & I went shopping for a few hours this morning & left my 5 & her 3 whippets in my backyard. We came home to find them all very excited because they'd bailed up a snake. It was mainly my 2 boys Tag & Puck but I could see all the plants were trampled where the snake was so they'd all been giving it a hard time. I was thinking of killing it but my friend started carrying on saying they're protected. I really wouldn't want to kill it anyway but I wasn't going to take her advice which was to just leave it. It was right near my back door & I know they're deadly, it was a Copperhead. I rang the wildlife sanctuary but they wouldn't send anyone, rang 2 wildlife rescue numbers only to get recorded messages. My friend took off she wasn't going to stay & help so I rang another friend who offered to kill it. No good, but luckily another friend overheard the converstation & came round to at least give me some moral support & be there in case I got bitten. I got out my snake catching equipment that I used last summer when i found a snake in my kitchen, gumboots, plastic bucket with lid, heavy leather gauntlets & the good old trusty barby tongs, long handled of course. summoned up my nerve & grabbed poor snake about a handspan behind it's head. Really scary, it managed to get its head around & bite the tongs. I said lots of unmentionable words but managed to drop it in the bucket & get the lid on. Right now I expect it's trying to find somewhere to live cause I took it up the road to the national park & let it go. I reckon I deserve a bravery medal even if I do say so myself.

I'm seriously thinking of trying to buy the proper snake grabbers that snake catchers use because this is becoming a regualr happening.

Oh yes & we checked all the whippies & they seem fine. It was a few hours ago now so if they were bitten they'd be showing symptoms by now, actually they'd be dead.

Linda, snake catcher extraordinare.

OMG, get yourself a large drink, get me one too..........I'm all a shake just reading it. (w00t)

I think I need a large drink just reading it. But I am glad you did not kill it, just hope it is not a homing snake. (w00t)

(w00t) Bet it wondered what had hit it, 8 whippets giving it the run-around! Then you turn up with your tongs & your bucket.....

Wow, you certainly are brave!!!!

Thank goodness none of you or the dogs were bitten :sweating: - and how shocking that no-one would come out and help you!

Wow, I'm impressed Linda  . I would have hid inside, trembling, waiting and watching trough binoculars until it dissapeared. Snakes, yuk :nuke:

(w00t) (w00t) Maybe living in rainy England ain't so bad after all :sweating: :sweating: well done you

Rather than pay the money to buy a snake hook you could easily make one from an old golf club. I have a few here so I'll get the instructions. It is really easy to make one, I'll get the info and PM it to you.

Are there a lot of snakes in Scotland Lynn  :teehee:

Well done you, for both being able to deal with the snake and not killing it! Lucky whippets if they had been hassling it, the snake must have been pretty placid! Hope you didn't squidge it with the tongs too hard.

Steve Irwin .......................................... my hero!!!

I would have just died before it could get at me.I would have been fritted to death (w00t) (w00t) (w00t)

Lucky for me Copperheads are probably the least aggressive of our venomous snakes but if they bite & you cant get help you're pretty sure to die.

It makes me really nervous to leave the dogs alone but sometimes I have no choice. I counted up the number of times I've been confronted with a snake in or near my house....it comes to 7!!!!!! I suppose it's to be expected living in the country.

Lynn thats good of you to offer to send me a plan of a snake catcher, yes please do.

I've been trying to imagine something in my head, I was wondering about some of that white poly pipe that electricians thread wiring through. Then if I threaded plastic covered wire through it so it forms a loop to noose the snake. would that work? I dont know what snake catchers use. Maybe I'll have to go to one of those demonstrations where they handle snakes & watch how they do it because it's all happening much too often & only once was I able to get a professional out to remove it for me.

I am most afraid for my whippets, I dont think I could bear to come home to find them dead from snake bite. I know it happens alot here too. :(

Lol Lesley, Nah but I worked in a zoo where we ran a reptile rescue. No worries I'll get those plans sent to ya.

Steve Irwin !!!!! :x I rather half a dozen snakes in my backyard than that maniac. :- "

Hi,

Snakes I hate them. Living where I do it is just so hard to keep them away. I do all the normal things, never leave anything on the ground for them to hide under. I mow twice a week in the grass growing weather. I still get them though. Yes, I kill everyone of them. Well, some get away. The last snake episode was

tradgic and I lost my beautifull Middy. After four hours of vetinary work and a very large four figure sum she passed away. The only consolation was that she was so heavily sedated she did not suffer. Two full doses of anti venine and many other things, also hooked up to the the anesthetic machine so she could breathe as her whole body was starting to herorrage. They must be one of the most abnoxious things this earth has. .............and I shall continue to kill them when I can. God I hate snakes.

LOL - Lida I was almost gonna say I agree with you and then I thought about it. Steve Irwin doesn't scare me, he doesn't have a lightening strike and is not venomous (just terribly annoying) and wouldn't ever kill my dogs - only I am likely to die from embarrassment (with him as a representative Aussie) ... so I think I could cope better with him (even though he is a maniac) than I could with half a dozen snakes! (w00t)

Jill - I know exactly where you're coming from.

Hi,

Thank you Lana, I am sure you do understand. We live in a wonderful country but it can be very hostile at times.

I miss my Middy so much. I am not ashamed to say I still cry for her.

Jill
