Well done you, for both being able to deal with the snake and not killing it!  Lucky whippets if they had been hassling it, the snake must have been pretty placid!  Hope you didn't squidge it with the tongs too hard.
Steve Irwin .......................................... my hero!!!

I agree, he really cares about all sorts of creatures, not just reptiles, but his staff are just as passionate and he obviously adores Bindi and his old Staffie, Suey. Makes him a good bloke in my book!!! I don't have much desire for travel but I would just love to go to Australia Zoo.

Jill I am sorry you lost Middy to snake bite, I dont blame you for despatching them. You have Taipans up there too. I dont think I would have dealt with it the same way if it was one of them. It's just that the copperhead the other day wanted nothing to do with the dogs or me, it was incredibly hard to provoke. Only when I had a hold of it with the tongs, & it probably thought it was in somethings jaws, did it bite. If I'd come home to dead dog/s I would've sliced it up in little pieces I am sure. I dont hate snakes though I fear them & respect them. The poisonous ones that is, the non venomous ones are fine.

I am off to Healesville Sanctuary soon to see the reptile display & hopefully get some advice on what to do about them.

LOL - Lida I was almost gonna say I agree with you and then I thought about it. Steve Irwin doesn't scare me, he doesn't have a lightening strike and is not venomous (just terribly annoying) and wouldn't ever kill my dogs - only I am likely to die from embarrassment (with him as a representative Aussie) ... so I think I could cope better with him (even though he is a maniac) than I could with half a dozen snakes! (w00t)

Jill - I know exactly where you're coming from.

I have lived before in area where there were venomous snakes, however none of them were aggressive. As a child we had a country house where we encountered venomous snakes on daily bases. We were told that you'd be dead within 40 minutes if bitten and considering that our place was an hour from medical help....... Antivenin was available but was too perishable to be kept in the house. One day my brother pushed me into tall grass, as I landed I looked to my left and there, just about 6" from my face, was a snake, it hissed at me and as I did not move it slithered away.

When we lived Sydney we had black red-bellied snakes but they were also shy and generally kept out of our way. Although my dogs did kill one. (w00t)

I do not know what I would do if I had to live with some of the more dangerous species.

As far as Steve Irwin goes I know exactly what I would like to do with him. Sorry Dessie, but people who truly care about wild animals do not turn them into circus. Anyway, why do you think that what you know about this man is what he really is, it is all down to publicity and spin doctoring. :- "

Hi Linda,

Yes, I think we must have every kind of snake known to man here. LOL. I must have been a snake day yesterday. My daughter rang from Tasmania to tell me where I keep the whippets when go home they caught a big red bellied black. (w00t) . I was back there only a few weeks ago showing.

Cheers Jill :teehee:
