iam intrested to know about peoples pedigree racing whippets are they say from racing parents show parents workers or a mixture do dogs from workers make good racers do dog from show make good racers what is the djffrence

I have a show bred dog who is a good racer. The show and coursing bred dogs tend to be on the larger side and can suffer from the weight handicap. I saw a Laguna (really from Laguna kennels) whippet who was a racer; she looked like a show type to me. On the balance, if you are really keen on racing you are likely to do better with a racebred dogs whose parents, grandparents, etc were chosen for their speed and keeness on the lure. But sometimes other dogs do well also, and many of the primarily racebred dogs do have some show or coursing line ancestry within a few generations of their pedigrees. And most whippets enjoy racing, even if they don't become top racers; you can always go in for time trials and fun runs.

If you are considering taking up Whippet Racing I would suggest that you look for a race breed puppy/dog as they are usually faster than Show/Working stock.

This is not to say that you will not have as much fun racing your Whippet from Show or Working breeding.

At East Anglia Whippet Racing Club we do have both and do try to arrange racing so that they race with dogs off the same ability.

If you are competitive and wish to enter Opens arround the country you should consider Racing Stock.

From where ever your Whippet comes from they are PETS first & competitive racing dogs second, and are all part of the family and are with you for life.

My first whippet was show/coursing bred. We had lots of fun racing, although I admit it was mostly consolation racing. But I was so proud when his performance went beyond what I expected.. I learned a lot and he had minimal injuries over his 9 year racing career. I had the chance to learn as I was going along with him without making any major mistakes.

If you are happy to gradually learn about racing as you go along a show/coursing dog will be of strong constitution and can often withstand mistakes made out of lack of knowledge. On the other hand if you want a winner from the start you will need a racing bred dog.
