I had to put a Halti on my dog as he pulled so badly six weeks after adopting him that I was in pain in bed at night. He's been wearing it for about 6 weeks. I took him to training last Sunday in a dog class. There were lots of dogs there and he was excluded from the group but gradually was able to get closer. They had an off-lead socialising session which the trainer said she wanted to try him on. I hid behind the trainer as millions of dogs went charging around like maniacs - my dog included - and just felt panicky. He was brilliant, no barking, no fighting, wagging his tail at other people if he stopped for a second, then he found a ball and played with that for a long time on his own. I was so proud of him! Taking him next week, but starting to get nervous again I hope it goes as well.

I digress. the trainer gave me a calming band to try. The first walk after the session it seemed great, but I slightly altered it by accident trying to work out how it went on, I thought I'd put it back correctly. He still pulls, but I can hear it choking him slightly, and when we pass other dogs, he barks in a restricted way. I'm wondering if I have put it on incorrectly or if it's mean to do this. Anyone any experience of either and which is better? Thanks.

I'll be honest I hadn't heard of them and I would have been wary except that it is made by Mekuti who are respectable manufacturers and it is based on T Touch principles. But two things - first if you think it is choking him slightly then I would suggest yes, you do need to adjust it because from my reading of the website that shouldn't happen; and second it's not that OR a head collar, the website says clearly that the calming band should NOT be used with a lead.
Mekuti Calming Bands can help with excessive barking, emotional responses and general confidence.

Just as an additional thought - keep a close eye on your dog during the free for all, it can be overwhelming for some dogs.

Also, while head collars and so on can help with preventing pulling they (along with everything else) are just tools. You might find this video helpful to start loose lead walking too - it does talk about anxious dogs but the principles still apply.

He gets training for leash walking at other times. The Socialisaton was supervised by a few trainers, plus owners. He loved it!

The Mekitu is not the same as the one I'm trialing, this definitely can be used with lead. Not sure I like it though, it does pull on his thorat, I might go back to the Halti.
