Chap who came to mend my washing machine yesterday was admiring Finn and Tyg and saying how much he'd have loved a whippet but he got a JRT instead. He'd seen a couple of whippet litters advertised but at £800 for a bitch puppy he couldn't afford one !! I did put him right re. the going rate for KC reg whippets, but who is charging £800 ?? Unbelievable.

Nothing surprises me these days!

are they gold good greef thats rediculas and i et the breedres say. I dont make any money all the cost goes on the pups lol

On a pet site I go on some one was advertising a litter of whippet pups. One was a blue and white the others were brindles. She was advertising the blue at £425 I think and the others at £400. I asked her what the breeding of them was she said she didn't know they were by her friends working dog out of her pet bitch and wasn't registered. She said they were priced so that she knew they would be going to good homes and all her puppy owners would keep in touch with her.

This lady sounds a little naive methinks Helen?!!!!

funny thing is - I've never seen that kinda price asked for a well bred litter.

I would be quite happy to pay that sort of price for the right pup from the right breeder

i think whippets should be £400-£500.

I did try to tell her you can buy registered pups for that price and less but she said blues are rare so are worth more. I did try to tell her but she wasn't having anything of it.

Sounds like she could be left with a houseful of whippets :D (and let's face it, for most of us that would be total bliss)

She thought I was interested in the blue when I said Iwasn't she said they were all sold

Most repuitable breeders seem to charge £475 for bitches and £425 for dogs.

At that price, they are KC registered and have first inocculations.

I have never seen whippets advertised at £800 and would doubt the quality of the breeding and committtment of the breeder trying to rip people off.

I would never charge a different price for dogs and bitches - I am always intrigued as to why people do.

well i have to say i really do not understand he difference in price for dogs and bitches that in itself seems ridiculous to me and would lead me to think a novice thinking that because they paid more for the bitch she is worthy of breeding from :( and looking myself for a new addition to show last year was prepared to pay £450 for a puppy from a reputable breeder imo they should be no more than that :)

I think you've hit the nail on the head with that one affieluver as when I first paid more for a pedigree terrier bitch than a dog many years ago. I in my stupid naevity I thought 'Well at least with a bitch I can breed from her which you can't do with a dog' ( I never did of course).

It infuriates me that people are trying to charge these over inflated prices, it can only serve to hurt the breed. In my (humble) opinion, whippets are overbred anyway (average 7-9 pages of them on Epupz at any one time?) If certain people think they can command crazy prices, the whippet market could explode.

So far whippets have seemed to fall beneath the radar as regards targeted dog theft. if they suddenly become hot property because they are so 'valuable' we will all need to keep a closer eye on our dogs.

Though my dogs are priceless to me, personally, I'd like to see whippets kept as cheaply priced as is viable for the breeder so as not to draw too much unwanted attention to the breed. Sadly however, we are an odd lot as a breeder friend of mine has been so slated in the past by her peers for keeping their prices low that they have been forced to increase prices as 'Dogs that cheap cant be any good'!

£400 bitch or dog without innoculations.

Thats what we charge I believe thats about normal up here.

The reason for not vaccinating is the new owner then takes them to the vet and can then be assured they have a healthy pup and I know they are then registered.

I must say though that I was offered £800 for my blue dog, He has already been chosen by a lovely family so I said no way, So are Blues more in demand?

I have a blue and a blue/ brindle - I didn't realise they were rare! There was a thread on here a couple of months back about the fact that blues seem to not do so well in the show ring - maybe that's why there is generally less??? I wanted dogs - so was quite happy that they cost less than the bitches!!!
