As for a dog acted as a deterrent, a friend of mine had a large dark colored GSD, it was a real softy but she competed in working trials. For this she had trained her dog to speak on command, one evening at dusk she was out, the dog off lead wandering around when she noticed a couple of young...
Further to JoanneF's reply, I have always found that the best way to teach a dog to stop barking, is to first teach it to bark on command. This automatically teaches it to stop.
My last Shelti, that I lost at 18 1/2, still wanted to go out for a walk so I took her twice a day. But a walk that would have taken us about 10 mins finished up taking 40 or 45 mins, still she enjoyed it so I didn't mind. I do now occasionally see a lady walking her old Goldie, (no idea how old...
I think one possible reason for her afternoon poos being soft is her being a typical Whippet and running. When I could take Folly racing if she ever pooed after a run it was always very soft but other times it was normal and well formed. Incidentally have you thought about trying her at racing...
Folly sleeps with me, under the duvet. I am always amazed on hot nights in summer she still gets under it even though I'm lied on top. And although theirs a duvet between us she still positions herself to be touching me as far as possible.
My girl, when I took her to racing, when we arrive I take her for a walk round the field often she poo's and if she does its a normal well formed poo. Then she goes racing, occasionally after I pick her up at the end and walk her back she poo's, and then its always very sloppy. I do not know if...
For me the ads don't worry me, I just skip past them. I expect the people that pay to have them on will not want to hear that but I find the same with the telly. Every now and again someone asks what I thought of some advert or other and all I can say is I hadn't seen it though I had watched the...
Folly is another Whippet that has waterproof coats, warm coats and waterproof warm winter coats. She hates getting wet and although she's not very happy in the rain she does at least go out with a coat. I am a bit puzzled about one Border Collie I see at times that has a coat on. I have never...
I can honestly say I remember and miss every dog I have lost but Gypsy who was a lovely Sheltie that I lost in 2010 was and is special. She was the last Sheltie and indeed the last dog that my wife and I shared, she was thirteen when I lost my wife so she was already a senior. I remember telling...
JudyN, I must admit I have continued walking Folly twice a day throughout. To me its simple, its very easy for me to stay well away from people so couldn't see any thing against it. OK, Folly tends to go close to most people allowing them the opportunity to 'say hello' to her and she does greet...
I tried a cone on Folly once after she had a chunk taken out of her side and found out that cones and Whippets necks / heads are not compatible. As soon as I took my eyes of her it came over her head. So I had to put a close fitting body suit on her.
JoanneF, I'm not sure, but my reading of BarryTindall's post is that the breeder wants him to keep it intact to allow the breeder to be able to use it as a stud. if that's right I would be a bit concerned as although the breeder will obviously know its breeding they will not know if the pup will...
I use Martingales with Folly my Whippet, as JudyN says it normally sits loose but can be adjusted so it tightens up. I cant be sure about what would happen with a twister / puller, but I don't think it would be more liable to come off then a normal collar. With a long necked dog I find they are...
My Whippet, now a ten year old, sleeps with me, under the duvet. After all in the early days Whippets were used as 'hot water bottles' and I tend to think every one has learned the fact. lol.
Hal, my Whippet Folly finds my normal walking speed hard for her so she tends to go slow letting me get slightly ahead, then walking at her normal speed till she's a bit in front. This keeps repeating but as she doesn't actually get to a tight lead both me and the GC assessors are happy. In fact...
As to the KC Good Citizen, it does not make a difference which side the dog walks on, only that its on a slack lead. Also note for the KCGC the dog does not need to be in the typical obedience position of being close to your leg. It only needs to walk on a slack lead. As you I am right handed...
