Flobo, I am more and more convinced that some people just live without any common sense at all.

Just thought I'd pop to the cafe for a quick 'what the hell?!' moment.. I was in the park walking 'my' entire dog this morning, on a lead as usual; a beautiful young cockerpoo came running over, my dog was fine with her, then the owner came and got her on the lead quick, saying " she's in season, her recall is usually really good but she's not listening to me at the moment..." sometimes I really do despair. I did politely(I must of been in a good mood!) point out to him he should have her on the lead at all times during her season, especially as he was choosing to walk her in a busy park with a lot of entire males mooching around off the lead. To boot it was her first season!! Please don't risk it I said, she will have one thing on her mind also and it certainly won't be coming back to you when you call her!..(excuse the italics but yes it was a male owner)

Blimey....some take their chances! One of ours is on season right now and although our garden is dog proof, we still don't let her out without one of us being there for a 'look out' and security. I'm not worried any dogs getting in or ours getting out....worried more of the two legged thieves that could possibly make their way through various obstacles and find their way to our property.
Unfortunately the shortage of basic knowledge of dog keeping run into all parts of dog info If only every dog owner would receive book of dog/bitch basics that is coded to go with the chip. At least then there would not be no excuse left to not know....other than if they cannot read in first place

Puppy Sitka is now 15 weeks old. He has loved the snow this week, running and jumping around in it, not feeling the cold. He overdid it yesterday though and flaked out immediately on getting home. He ignored his favourite caterpillar toy and even his arch rival.

I will be so glad when the weather's warmer so we can leave the back door open, and when it isn't dark at 'bedtime'... For some reason, when it's really cold, Jasper is more likely than ever to shout at the monsters at the bottom of the garden - though only at bedtime. Even if he's been out for a wee at 9.15pm, he is adamant he needs to go out and do the shouty thing at 9.30pm. And when he comes back in he's so pumped up, that he shouts at us too. If he does this at 9.30pm but I don't go straight up to bed after, then when I do get up to go to bed he wants to go out and shout again and gets agitated when I tell him he can't. As he's worked up, he's regressed when it comes to barking at Mr N when he comes up to bed later.

Oh well, it's a phase and it'll pass in spring/summer. I dare say the foxes are more active making whoopee at the moment.

But on a positive note: We saw a couple of deer the other side of a fence the other day. I'd already put J on lead as we were taking a short cut which was, strictly speaking, trespassing on golf club land, and though he was very excited at the sight of them, he realised he wasn't going to be able to take off after them and was no problem to control - he was an absolute star Though in a way it makes me sad as he may have just assessed the situation and decided that given the state of his legs now, he didn't stand a chanc

Poor old Jasper had an incident in the park

I was chatting to a couple of friends with their three spaniels and lurcher. He's met them all plenty of times, with no issues. One of the spaniels came up to him, and I heard Jasper give a very low grumble. The spaniel then told him off loudly, Jasper went 'Eeeeek!' and wheeled away, his wobbly legs couldn't keep up with his brain, and he fell in a pile of akimbo limbs doing the lurcher howl of death. Any sighthound owner will know that after 30 seconds of 'I've broken every limb, I'll never walk again,' the dog generally makes a miraculous recovery, but when Jasper did get back onto his feet, he couldn't decide which of his four legs to hold up - he wanted to hold up at least two, but that wasn't going to work.

He was able to walk home, with a bit of a limp, and a wobblier back end than usual, but he's hobbling quite heavily now. Hopefully he's just jarred his dodgy joints and will recover in a day or two.

The spaniel's owner was very apologetic, but it was just one of those things - Jasper was the first to growl, though the spaniel did rather overreact. Dogs will be dogs.

The poor mite. Doesn’t take much to zap their confidence. Thoughts and sympathy with Jasper. Hope he’s settled for the evening. Cuddles and tummy massage.

There wasn't one They've not got together for months because of the restrictions. Meanwhile Mr N has become a bit rusty. He does have a practice pad in the kitchen and drives me mad when he plays on it constantly while I'm cooking, cleaning or trying to have a conversation with him. I've only snapped at him once though, which makes me pretty much a saint, I reckon

Jasper's hobbling today, but not too badly, and was still keen to go on his walk this morning.

I did a dog 1st aid course in between lockdowns and the woman running it told us a great use for those big elephant bags from sainsburys(or equivalent), I would use a well used, softer one : if you cut both ends off you'll have a ready made, fold up-able, dog sling with handles! I don't know if Jasper, being a rather special dog, would tolerate the help if he needed it ever, but it may be a worthwhile bit of kit to have just in case his legs give out on a walk...a handy bit of support if only 2 of his legs want to work.

That's not such a bad idea, Flobo, thanks Yes, he might have his own opinions on the matter, but he'd have much stronger opinions about being carried, not that I'd be able to anyway. I have often wondered what would happen if he collapsed on a walk....

The big guy will be back firing on all cylinders in a couple of days, he'll spot something that takes his interest and he'll forget all about his aches n pains.
I take it the O/H rattles the sticks in the band, if he's still looking for a name have a look at old film titles for inspiration.

A couple of days after Jasper's incident, he was back to normal - at least what passes for normal with Jasper So no lasting damage done

There's a lab in the local park who is an absolute menace - mugs everyone for treats and is more persistent than a swarm of wasps at a cream tea And of course he knows I carry high-value treats, not that I've ever given him any. Today he set his sights on me when Jasper and I were lying/sitting on the grass in the sun. J got up and tried to tell him to back off with his body language, but being far too subtle (and polite!) for a lab, so I had both of them wheeling round me, one trying to slobber me and the other trying to get in between us. I did get a tongue on the face...

The owners came over and dragged him away, apologising. They always apologise, but of course it keeps on happening.

I'm going to have to start reacting as J would have done in his younger days

JudyN you have my sympathies in spades. Some people just do not learn from past experiences and almost shrug off their charges’ infringements upon others with amused nonchalance. This assumed droit de seigneur is ill mannered and can wreck any good feeling in a community. A hex is needed.
