    Why 150 Yards?

Hi John! Don't forget greyhounds are really sprinters too even though they may run over longer distances. My point is also that we are talking about non-peds and so even if "proper bred whippets" only run over 130-160 yards, is this really long enough to show the real speed of a non- ped whippet?

    Why 150 Yards?

Thanks for that. Good points there. So you agree that 150 yards is probably too short? If this is so would you also agree that it is less likely that bitches will prove to be faster once the run is over 240-350 yards? Perhaps then the bitches would lose the advantage they appear to have in...

    Why 150 Yards?

Good point but remember : 1) that still doesn't mean 150 yards is a true test of speed and 2) have you seen what coursing greyhounds used to do in a day? A simpe eight dog stake would involve as many as three or more runs after a hare!! That would be an absolute but-guster! Some of those...

    Why 150 Yards?

Sorry if I seem to be banging on about this but the more I'm learning the more questions I feel I need to ask!! From what I can see whippet racing seems to be based on a 150 yards sprint although it is clear that there are a number of bends races. Coming from a greyhound background I saw that...

    Bitches Faster Than Dogs??

I think I'm learning fast! It's been a real eye opener. I think the answer lies somewhere in the question of weight and yards per pound and distance run. It does seem that the bitches have less of an advantage when running from scratch especially if the distance is further than the standard 150...

    Bitches Faster Than Dogs??

This may be the purest test of out and out speed and it is interesting that you say that the Kaiser Chief dog and the Bagheera bitch have won against each other so this may show that ultimately show that there is not much in it. I have had the pleasure to see Bagheera race and I was left in...

    Bitches Faster Than Dogs??

This is amazing! There must be a reason why the great dogs could never compare with the classic bitches! I know that greyhound bitches are great stayers and conversely, there are very few great greyhound sprint bitches but I simply can't get my head round the differences with whippets! Could...

    Bitches Faster Than Dogs??

Hi Sharon! What are ABC races? Are they based on weights or are they graded in some way? Was the Scottish Grand National open to all comers? I am truly amazed that it resulted in an all bitch final. It would be interesting to see the proportion of bitches entered compared to the numbers of...

    Bitches Faster Than Dogs??

Hi Karen! I see your point but if that's the case why are greyhound dogs faster than greyhound bitches? What I can't understand is that what or why is it that whippets are different?

    Bitches Faster Than Dogs??

Being new and still quite green in the whippet racing world I do a lot of probing and asking questions. I had quite a bit of experience in the greyhound world and I was quite surprised to learn from a lot of people in the whippet world who say that bitches are faster than dogs. I have...

    Thurrock Whippet Racing Club

I'd just like to say what a great day I had at Thurrock today. It was my first ever visit to a whippet racing event and I was absolutely bowled over by what a really warm and friendly group of people you all are. My son Benjamin, aged 8 came away even more excited than I was.We both thoroughly...

Kenny M Thanks for the photos. Much appreciated. I have sent a pm of personal thanks! S.Rodgers Thanks for the recommendation. The pup in the photo looks just lovely but from what I gather Madrid's pups are also bound to fabulous pups too! The way things are at the moment it may all come...

Non- Ped Whippet Pup Wanted..please Help!

Hello there! After several months of thinking about it I have now firmly decided that I would like to have a pup. The time is as right now as it will ever be and if I put it off any longer I'll be thinking about it forever. I have just got to go for it now. I am very much a beginner but I do...

Can Greyhounds Be Used For Lamping?

Cheers Nigel! You make an interesting point. The question I might raise in response is how well would a greyhound respond to sympathetic and specific training? Most ex- racing greyhounds were bred and trained simply to chase an artificial hare around a track and were never required to show any...

Can Greyhounds Be Used For Lamping?

Thanks Ian! It seems that you can use greyhounds then! I agree that they would probably be less robust than a tough, purpose bred lurcher but I have also seen some tough greyhounds on the coursing field but many people believe that they are not bright enough to do many of the things that...

Can Greyhounds Be Used For Lamping?

Hi there! I am very much at the learning stage but I was wondering if anyone has used a greyhound, possibly an ex-racer for lamping? From what people seem to be saying (I cannot comment either way) greyhounds might be more difficult to train to retrieve as well as a lurcher or whippet but I...

    Where Can I Learn Lamping?

Thanks Mark! You have certainly given me some ideas. There are a few farms near me but to be honest I don't see too many rabbits running about. Perhaps I should look closer or take a walk at night to see what's there. Funnily enough there are quite a few rabbits active in Trent Park which is...
