As the risk of repeating what others have said, whippets just aren't the sort of tough dogs that are suited to kennels. They have very thin fur (sometimes bald in areas), almost no fat, and thin skin that tears easily. There's also the question of their hunting instinct - if a neighbour's cat...
Just wondering if anyone else thinks that dog poo bags are just too expensive. One of the cheapest places I can find is some website called poobagsdirect, which sells their 'value' bags at £15 for 1000, so 1.5p per bag. That sounds quite cheap until you see that Sainsbury's sell their Basics...
About 4 years ago we had to put our 3 whippets into kennels, just for 1 night thankfully, but felt like we'd betrayed them, waving goodbye to them in their concrete cell, with the barking of other unknown dogs all around them, and the air heavy with other dogs' smells. Also, although it was...
It looks like it was 01264 781144 (from http://www.salisburyonline.org.uk/info/6/ or http://venture-coats.salisbury.uk.amfibi.directory/uk/c/136008-venture-coats) but I have no idea whether that's still an active number.
As gypsysmum2 says this seems to be in the nature of whippets because of their innate drive to hunt, and the best option may be to accept that it's likely to happen sometimes, to minimise the possibly dangers in the circumstances, and keep him on a lead in places where it really is unsafe.
We...
Four years on I thought I'd post a follow up to this ancient thread. I am the "hubby" referred to in this thread, so I understand only too well how serious dog fallouts can be, having been to A&E twice to have my hands patched up after being badly injured while separating the warring parties...
Much as I'd like to take credit, they're not my pictures unfortunately (mine are only the West Cornwall Open photos), but I thought the local press photographer did a good job of it. Certainly a lot better that the usual "grip and grin" photos.
I thought people might be interested to see this from our local press:

Some good photos of some familiar faces.
If you're looking for someone to house-sit as well as dog-sit then I would have thought that people like Animal Angels (http://www.animalangels.co.uk/) would be OK with the situation as they wouldn't be walking your dogs along with other. We had one of their people stay in our house (Cornwall...
Thank you to everyone who supported our charity open on August 23rd. We had 75 entries for racing this year, and raised a total of £465 for the Children's Hospice South West (http://www.chsw.org.uk/).
Thanks again, and I hope everyone's dogs have a restful autumn and winter, out of the rain and...
It sounds like a scam. If you haven't changed the email address in your k9/dogforum profile then there's no reason for the system to send that email out to you. The link which was included in that email would probably take you to some scammer's web site, at best in order to harvest your details...
Finish line photos and pictures of some winners are now at:

One slightly duff picture (vets 21-25) - rain on the camera, dashing off to fill the generator with petrol, something like that.
As for previous years here are the finish line photos from the 2013 Open, the only slight malfunction being in race 34:

We were so lucky with the weather; almost too bright to take good...
Hi Darcia
If you want a copy of the full size picture file then you can grab that yourself off the Smugmug site by selecting the "original" resolution option then download to your PC. If you'd like a nice photo print (like the main supreme photo that was given to Becky) then I can do that for...
Here are the finish line photos for the West Cornwall 2012 Open, plus pictures of the Supreme winners and a couple of others. Really sorry but I missed race 44 (14-19lb main final) due to technical problems, but all others are here.

Wow, sounds like you had a really bad house-sitter. I'd be furious about that and demand some sort of compensation.
The agency we used has a written policy for their sitters - they have 2 hours "off duty" per day, when they can leave the dogs & house, which seems fair enough to me (if they're...
We've used kennels once, when our whippets needed just 1 night's stay while we went to a funeral. The dogs seemed rather shocked by the experience, and it took a few days before they were back to normal. I think that being in a strange and noisy environment with lots of other barking dogs and...
