    Clover's Diary

Clovers been a busy pup and has learned quite a few new commands but nothing reliable. We’ve started to practise impulse control and staying in command until broken. She’s doing pretty well! We don’t often train with the ball (normally treats) but we practised around some distractions today on...

Strange Loss of Skin on Neck

My Dobe got bald spots like this around her collar line when she was about 7 months old. No pain or discomfort just a lot of no fur. It was some sort of allergy in the end, we changed her type of collar the same time we changed her food which was silly but the fur grew back quickly and we didn’t...

    Clover's Diary

A short video of her practising her "Heel" and "Front". Won't be reliable for a while but she's learning very quick.

    Clover's Diary

Took a while longer as my day off turned into an 11:30am-11:30pm, but here it is — Kah’s very own wall. Just have to find a worthy photo! I have 33,000 on discs to look through, I’m sure I’ll find one... I’ve got her paw print and I’m hoping to find a tiny photo frame for it that...

    Clover's Diary

I’m sorry about your boy, it’s always difficult to say goodbye to a dog. They aren’t just dogs; they’re friends; it doesn’t matter if they speak a different language. I don’t normally cremate my dogs — the first dog I had that died was PTS and I was quite young, I didn’t really have the option...

    Clover's Diary

We got Kay back home today and the box is lovely. I'm picking up something to make a shelf for her tomorrow. No new video but Clover has been learning "Twist", "Heel" and "Weave" this week. Here are some photos of our walks the last few days. Pretty shoddy weather! We also have some small-dog...

    Exposure/flooding to triggers

We do clicker train. It’s effective for command training I’ve found and used it for more complex commands when I was teaching Kay, like her reverse between my legs and backward figure of eight. I’m using it in the same way for Clover, she’s more responsive to verbal praise at the minute but...

    Exposure/flooding to triggers

Thanks for the responses, very informative. In theory, unless I let a lorry hurt her she can only learn from the experience that there’s nothing to be scared of. I tackled fear based dog reactivity/aggression in a similar way using a very vague version of the BAT method in a controlled...

    Exposure/flooding to triggers

What does everyone think of it? I hear good and bad things. Clover is nervy around loud cars and big lorries, understandably, so I’m planning to take her to the supermarkets on delivery day to teach her they’re not going to get her.

    Clover's Diary

Thank you, it was a shock to find her but I feel she couldn’t have gone a better way. She deserved a peaceful death in her sleep, and her life was full and happy. She experienced so much and was by my side throughout every difficult time in my life. Honestly the best friend I’ve had, including...

    Clover's Diary

Sadly my beautiful, loyal best friend of 8 years Kay passed away on the 23rd of February. I did everything I could to make her happy over her life and she got the most well deserved peaceful death -- her heart simply stopped in her sleep at home. She'd aged quite a lot over the last year...

    Training help

Add: you can also, in low distraction areas, start moving the treat around in his sight while he holds eye contact to build his consistency with it and practise around a distraction. It doesn’t matter if he can see the treat, the command needs to be followed anyway type thing. He’ll catch on quick.

    Training help

Once they understand the word means eye contact, you can start demanding more from the dog and when they don’t offer what you want, just hold out until they do. Once he knows what the word means and once he realises flicking his eyes back and forth isn’t the command, he’ll hold eye contact for a...

    Some trick fun *video*

Just wanted to share a couple of videos. They're not much, just Kay showing off some tricks. She’s got a lot of energy but her joints are letting her down and she’s not able to run about too much anymore, or else she’ll be aching for days. I tend to just practise old tricks with her on walks now...

    Bit of a Rant

This is more of a rant than anything but I'm hoping someone can help me get on some good social platforms (pref. FB) for dogs with behavioural/training problems, where owners discuss different methods. I was a member of a facebook dog behaviour and training group, but have removed myself...

    Couple of pics

Hi everyone! Hope you're all well. Haven't been around much as me and my partner moved to our first proper place on the 10th of August, and I started my new full time manager role in a sector I have very little experience in on the 11th of August, so everything has been a bit stressful and...

    Body Language

Kay absolutely loves a cuddle but Clover never seeks them out and just seems to tolerate hugs and kisses, which I don't mind! Most of my dogs have turned out to be lapdogs and it's refreshing to have a dog that would rather be on the floor than in my arms! Clover's the first of my dogs to seem...

    Body Language

At the risk of derailing the thread, does anyone have a dog who isn't comfortable being hugged by them (the owner)?

    Neutering

I think the guideline is 18 months minimum for a large breed and 12 months minimum for a small breed. Some people agree with desexing at a very young age. IMO dogs should be given time for their minds and bodies to mature before hormones that affect those things are taken away or reduced.
