Hi

We adopted our hound back in the summer and he is now well-settled in.

Where at first he was aloof for a couple of months he now adores us.

He used to stand by our sides when let off the lead but now runs around like a lunatic.

He cried at night originally when left but is now secure that we are coming back and settles and sleeps well.

SO, what's the problem I hear you cry????

Well, we can't seem to get him completely house-trained!

He is 75% there but he still has 'accidents' every few days.

He is fed 8am and 5pm and usually walked or at the very least let outside at 7am/12pm/4pm and 10pm and often more............

He never ASKS to go outside ie. scratching at the door, pacing around etc and just seems to think if he's gotta go its ok............

Most nights he is clean and dry and does his stuff when taken out but other times he seems to think 'what the hell,I can't wait'and just goes.

This morning my partner got up a 5am (5am  ) to head him off at the pass. He (the dog!) wee'd and did a small poo so my partner came back to bed (deservedly so) for a rare lie in, leaving the hound on the settee. Lo and behold when we went down at 8am there was a pile and a puddle on the carpet.

Sometimes in the morning the dog whines or does one wuff which my partner nearly always responds to by going down and taking him out but this has crept forward to earlier and earlier -my partner is shattered!

SO,any advice please? We seem to be bending over backwards to make sure he has had every opportunity to 'go' but seem to be making no progress......

Any help very much appreciated!

are you able to crate him at night? ;)

my lot used to sleep in the sitting room. :huggles: ..then accidents started happening more and more, :x since they have been back in the crates they never have an accident as they dont like to pee/poo in their bed

Hiya

Thanks for your reply!

We did consider it when we first got him but after he settled so well thought it wasn't necessary - it does seem like a backward step - do you think he would get used to it at his age if he's never been crated before?

my mum and dad took on a dog, he was just under a year and had been in a kennel and not been caged, but after a week of being alittle unsettled he soon got used to it

my lot had spent a year out of crates at night but they soon got used to it again, and it saves alot of accidents every morning

my lot got so lazy, i got up 3 nights in a row to puddles and :x

so as i didnt know who was doing it i had to crate them all

Ever thought that he might be better if you had him sleep in your room!

Why not try it.... be he sleeps like a log!

Hi, i had the same problem with my greyhound Lily, i bought the biggest crate i could find and put the snuggliest bed in so she would be really comfy and she has never had an accident since. She only had the door shut for about a week and now she still sleeps in the crate but i leave the door open for her. I tried taking the crate down but at bed time she stands where the crate used to be and looks really lost so i ended up putting it back up.....bless her :huggles:

Thanks for all your help - as usual the problem seems to be resolved now - this happens whenever I post a problem on K9 community so I know what to do in future.

BTW, its my HUSBAND who gets up at these hideous times. :b

He IS well trained ...........

Watch this space for future hound problems...............
