I say Keep the last one that will cheer you up

we are keeping one, for showing (w00t) , but they each had such different, wonderful characters. its like giving away my children :( i'm just so glad i'll be keeping in contact, but its not the same. dammit, i miss all those little faces looking up at me in the morning waiting for cuddles, cleaning then feeding :( in that order, bless! i'm worse about them leaving than amber, their mother :b . have you bred, lesley?

Not yet Lalena but I will be just like you, probably worst :b I don't know how I am just going to pick just one, even when I'm visiting puppies I have to drag myself away, my OH is worried about when we breed because he knows I will want to keep them all :huggles: :huggles:

tell me about it! for a while, there was a lull, and no one called about buying one, and i kept saying to my oh, "how about we keep 2 instead of 1?" and "its not so bad if we get left with them..." NOT impressed! at that point spaying was mentioned! told me if i was going to be like this next time, no way would he let me breed amber again! i think he had visions of a dozen dogs running riot :D

be warned, you cannot underestimate the attachment you get to the furry little suckers! helping a 1st time mum with getting a puppy out of its sack, initially guiding them to her teats... i'm going to start blubbing again!

how many dogs have you got, lesley?

why breed if u feel this way about getting rid of pups(hope they all get good homes) :- "

Yes lalena it is hard for me too, people ask me why don't you breed and the answer is always the same I do not like breeding because it upsets me when the pups go  but seriously I think if they are going to good homes and if you are going to see them every now and again it does set your mind at rest...hope they all have brill homes :huggles:

thanks for your kind words, people, much appreciated :D

the reason we bred was partly because we want to show, partly because she is a good specimen (alot of staffs are badly bred, coming from a long line of faders, c sections, clefts etc :( ) in looks, and above all else nature. it took us months to find the best father possible, one who complemented her good points as well as endowed with what she lacked (her feet arent as neat as desired)

it may seem selfish, but i think she has a great deal to offer the gene pool, and careful breeding will help to overcome their bad reputation. i think thats the aim of every breeder, decent ones at least, improving the breed.

this aside, i worship every paw print, and overall its been one of the best experiences of my life, being privilaged to share this magic with our girl

Aaaw Laleena - parting with those puppies must be one of the worst things you have to do ..... :huggles: for you - Now I would just try imagining them all grown up and running round the house like mad things !!!! changed your mind about keeping them all ..........

What a silly question

the question was not silly i just hope they all get good homes and do well at showing, sound like she as been studying the breeding for a while and i hope it works out for them, just wish a lot more people study breeding before putting dogs together

I wasn't refering to Lalena's motives for breeding I was referring to the fact that it is a natural feeling for her to have an emotional bond with her dogs pups, therefore "why breed if you feel this way about getting rid of pups" is a silly question.

sadly, its all too true about people putting 'defective' (meaning either affected, or known carrier)animals together, just look at white dobes. or, in my breed, inbreeding waaaaay too much in order to produce 'blues', which can retail as much as £1500 per pup, nevermind that shape, head and temperament are severely compromised.not just by showing standards, either, but in potentially life threatening ways :( . they seem to forget that, while selective line breeding can help fix the good points in, inbreeding is far more likely to fix in bad points. theres a line of non ped staffs near me where normal whelping simply cannot happen, each bitch theyve bred has needed a ceaser, and instead of removing dam and progeny from the breeding program, which should happen, they repeatedly breed from them again and again.some poor girls have had 5 or 6 litters, all by c section.its not just on the female side, as they interbreed the male pups very closely, half siblings etc, so the tragic offspring have it coming from both sides :(

i dont think its even crossed their minds that a complete outcross could save the whole program, as well as prevent alot of suffering for future generations

We've recently sold our puppies-

It is easy to get attached-especially if you keep them a few weeks over-

But using mind over matter...from their birth onwards and the parting is not too bad-

From the moment they are born I remind myself that they're not mine/ours and I'm only caring for them temporarily for someone else...

Karen

i'll try to do that the next time, i'm afraid i've bonded completely with ambers 1st litter,    it does get easier then?

;)
