Ok, I was having a discussion with someone today about dogs going to the UK from NZ..

Is the UK a Rabies free contry??

and if a dog in going to the UK from New Zealand what would the quarantine period be?

Thanks in advance

the uk is a rabies free country, and the quaratine is 6 months,

hope this has helped

it can all be found on the defra site.

a dog needs to have a rabies anti bodies test done 6 months before entering the uk, if not then has to spend 6 months in quarantine

Australia has the world strictest quarantine laws and dogs from NZ used to be able to come here with only 2 days of quarantine. I would be very surprised if your dog, coming from rabies free NZ, would have to stay in quarantine in UK for 6 months. But you need to ask the UK quarantine services. :)

There is no quarantine for new zealand dogs imported into Australia (and visa versa)

There is from NZ to UK? don't see any reason why. There is nothing to potentially harm the UK from either Aus or NZ.

Ok yes that is what I had thought that the UK was a Rabies free country .. but the erson I was having the discussion with was telling me that UK had rabies, then said only in someplaces.

I didn't think though that there would be such along quarantine time coming from a country that is rabies free.

I know dogs coming from the Uk to NZ can arrive at the airport the owner can pick up and take the dog straight home with a 30 day quarantine period in the own home (well that was around 20yrs ago, when a imported dachie came from the UK)

I cannot be 100% sure but I think that even from Europe, dogs with the "passport" can now enter UK without any quarantine, or if there is something it would also be lot less than 6 months - after all people come over to show at Crufts.

Previously, all dogs being imported to the UK from Australia and NZ had to undergo quarantine. The pet passport is now in place but unless you comply, I still thought quarantine applied. It's nothing to do with rabies.

I've just had a friend go through hoops trying to export frozen semen to Canada. Their regulations are entirely different to the USA but the semen travels through the USA to reach Canada. Took 6 weeks to finalise arrangements.

Don't rely on what someone says. Check the official government sites for the correct information.

Cheers

i have friends who have both entered the uk from europe and gone and came back. i'm not sure how it is from say sweden or norway, they're also rabies free, but from the rest of europe the 6 months quarantine is the period the dog spends before travel after the anti bodies test with their owner who is supposed to keep the dog away from potentially ill animals. once the paperwork is done and worming is up to date you enter uk, get checked over by a vet and that's it.

of course if you don't follow those steps your dog will have to stay in the quaranntine kennels for 6 months, though you can visit and in some cases the 6 months period gets reduced.

Having jumped through all the hoops to import my lot from the UK to NZ , the rules are , really , straight forward.....

If the country you are exporting a dog from ( ie New Zealand ) is recognised by the 'pets passport' scheme , it may enter the UK WITHOUT quarantine , providing has undergone all nesesary health and safety checks ... innoculations , blood & faeces samples etc

Rabies shots are not necessary if the country of origin is recognised as ' Rabies Free'

Getting the timings right for all the tests can be a bit of a trial , but if you work it all out with your vet it usually goes without hitch !!

You have to fly them with a recognised animal courier , but I did everything else with the help of my vet and saved a fortune ......

All the info can be found on the NZ & UK Maff sites

Hope this has helped
