Alba is settling down so well, i feel like he's been here ages.

He's soon made himself popular with my family and friends with his good

manners and handsome looks.

I really cant fault him and this big fella is here to stay

But i would like some advice on this one thing he does.

When were out and Alba is of the lead if he spots a large dog he will run

up to it and circle it barking. He makes no attempt to attack it or anything

in fact the barking doesn't really seem aggressive.

Once he's had his bark he returns to me.

Apart from the fact other owners don't like this and im not saying i blame

them, i'm worried he will do it to the wrong dog and get bitten.

I have spoken to Hilary and she said this behaviour started when she

took in a aggressive Lurcher, he had been very badly treated and was

afraid of everything and covered his fear with aggression.

Has anyone any suggestions that i could try to stop Alba doing this

imo the circling would indicate that he is trying to protect his "person" and throwing out a warning to the other dog , which from what you and hilary have said is more to larger dogs because of the lurcher, id try to distact him when you have seen before him and praise praise praise when he is distracted, he is still new to you so will be also fearful of whats happening to him

but you must also praise yourself on the fact that he is very good so quickly on his recall with you , he is obvious very happy with you , others can never seem to get such good recall , all takes love time and patience , which you give so well

I cant believe 77 people have read this and only Tanya

has any thoughts on it

finley does the same thing ann  i told you about it last time i saw you,and all the distractions in the world doesnt stop him :( so now we are quite vigilant and pop him on a lead anytime a dog is coming into range,he doesnt seem too bothered once on the lead :b

seriously murphy and blue do this everytime we are out and another dog comes over..to me they are looking after the girls....like you i worry they will get bitten one time...i get them back with treats but i cant stop them doing it...drives me mad cos they just charge off.....the girls are really friendly to any dogs but the boys are like a couple of thugs

Same here Trish once on the lead he doesnt seem to care but

if he's off i could do handstands and he would still go do it ;)

I put him on his lead when a dog comes but he will still go back

see if he can find the other dog to bark at it when i let him of again.

Sarah your sound exactly like mine, good girls

and badass boys

Ann I think Alba has some of the same breeding in him as my Oscar....he does the same funnily enough. I just also try to distract him, hes not over keen either on me stroking other dogs....he is very jealous. :sweating:

As you say some other dog owners definitely dont like it, but most people round here are ok once I explain....if I ignore Oscars behaviour hes actually better.

my vet once advised me to just walk in the opposite direction to where hes run,ive tried this but he still does the same thing but in a quicker run mode

also the vets said you shouldnt shout at your dog when there running off to another dog cause the dog could be thinking your egging them on like enforcing and encouraging the behaviour.

i have no idea what the answer is .....

talulla barks at every dog that comes in to view and she does it both when on and off the lead and in the garden.

it only started after we collected Bean and has got worse since the arrival of Ghillie and Mabel.

i have just put it down to her protecting her family - she is definately the mummy of the group as she insists on cleaning them all even if she has to pin them down (w00t)

i try never to shout at her but the distraction really does not work!!!

i hope someone else has a better answer for you :)

ooo god ann i feel you pain over the last few months ollie has started to do this but he also does it when on lead and now wen he starts doing this bleeding blue and tia join in  i was walking them this morning and the place we went they had to stay on lead till we got in the field and a lady with a little dog was trying to walk past and it was a nightmare as ollie started first barking and lunging forward to try get at the dog then blue and tia started they nearly pulled me over ,so what i did was to reasure the lady they wouldnt hurt her dog and she kindly stayed by us till ollie blue and tia had stopped barking every time they barked i gave sharpe tug on ther leads and eventualy they stopped :sweating: but if ther off lead ollie will run around in circles around the dog and just barks his head of and his fur on his back stand on end ,hes never gone for one but im scared as you say some other dogs dont take to kindly to it he may get bitten ,,which could make the problem worst ,im thinking of taking him out on his own now were i know ther will be loads of dogs and try to get him out of it :sweating:

phew.....

it is so nice not to be the only one with these problems - this forum is great!

Mmmm sounds like im not alone with this problem.

I dont call Alba at all, i use a whistle with him and

a little chopped up ham

Which he normally responds to straight away
