Ok, when I was in the states. Just before I left I was speaking to a friend of mine. She said that she had been told by a friend of hers that if her dog had never lifted his leg before he was castrated, that after he was castrated he would never lift his leg. The amount of time I have been working with dogs I've never heard anything like that before. And I have never had my dogs castrated. Could someone please answer this question for me?

Never heard that one! One of my greyhounds sometimes lifts his leg and sometimes can't be bothered and the other one tries to lift his leg but falls over! (w00t)

(w00t) Lol, Jd was like that when he started lifting his leg. Now when hes out he stops at every pole and lifts it...but after the second pole he lifts it and nothing comes out!

I've heard this befor ...........I guess that if a dog dosn't cock his leg and is then castrated, this will inevitably lower his testosterone level, causing him to feel no need to cock his leg for dominance marking out and about  .......Basic dog psychology really :- " .......As for some breeds .......You'll find Greyhounds are in most cases very submissive, so theres no need to mark :)

I'll throw this in the melting pot too...........Little Fynn always cocked cos he did what Archie did..........11 weeks onwards (w00t)

I hate when people make a sweeping statement like that. I have seen dogs (not castrated) that were very late cocking their legs; some were couple of years old. I have also seen male pups I bred to try to cock their legs - they must have been less than 3 months old.

Some dogs will calm down after being castrated some will not. So my guess would be some may never cock their leg regardless and some may, but as it is impossible to know what would have happened if he was not desexed, it is impossible to answer. But I have never met a dog that never cocked his leg. But then again in the USA the environment is full of synthetic estrogens, and I believe their problem in dogs with undescended testicles is getting progressively worse, so I would not be surprised if their males had some hormonal imbalance.

By the way, some of my bitches mark, usually this indicates they will be coming in season in month or 2.

You never met my old show bred Greyhound then (w00t) :D

All 6 of my girls mark .....nothing to do with seasons ....just more to do with pack placings and pack hierarchy :) ......Just my personal opinion and obs though .......

My four year old Rough Collie has sired 3 litters but still doesn't cock his leg (w00t)

my large 7 yr old ex-coursing bitch marks as often as a stud dog every time we go walking - even lifts her leg. I also have several males here who stretch out their back legs and pee directly under themselves - can not be bothered to lift!

I've Never heard of that!

I'd probably not cock my leg after castration anyway :p

Our bichon always has cocked wether anything comes out or not, Jack was a sometimes dog but whether he did or didnt it he would always end up peeing on his foot

My zak took a good two years to start cocking his leg, he started copying my retriever lol. JD started it almost right away however had a few accidents by falling over into the hedge. (w00t)

It's all very well but I look really stupid wiping his legs with baby wipes all the time!! (w00t)

I know...it was amusing at the time but when it was raining he would lift his leg and fall over. The other two just kinda stood a few feet away looking at him...it was a shame lol. (w00t)

i have had dogs that squat and dogs that cock thier leg...they were all neutered at different ages(they were all rescue)....never noticed who did what though....so im not sure of the reason but i have heard that said before years ago...im sure its not true??? ..its probably something else thats really complicated?

She has no ovaries, so she doesn't cycle. She just marks, loads. Especially in flowerpots, buckets and wellies.

Pleasant of her. :D Don't you just love 'em.

I've had two bitches cock their legs. Nothing to do with them coming into season or even thinking about it in their case.

I've got one dog here who starts to cock his leg and then realises that he needs a poo instead. :b
