THATS LIKE SAYING I DONT TAKE MY KIDS OUT BECAUSE THEY ONLY PLAY UP AND RUN OFF

IF A DOG CANT MEET OTHER DOGS THEN HOW CAN IT LEARN MANNERS AND HOW TO REACT

SOME VERY STRANGE IDEARS

ALL MY PUPS ARE LET OFF (one at a time ) WITH AN ADULT DOG THAT WILL PLAY AND RUN BUT WILL NOT TOLIRATE BEING CRABED OR EVEN NECKED

IN MOST CASES THE PUPS WILL INTRODUCE THERE SELF TO A STRANGE DOG THEN FOLLOW ON WITH THE WALK

I NEVER KEEP CALLING IT IT JUST FOLLOWS MY PACK

NEVER HAD A DOG THAT IS A FIGHTER

BUT HAVE SORTED A FEW OUT THAT I HAVE GOT AT A LATER AGE

ITS JUST TEACHING YOUR DOG MANNERS

SURLEY WHEN YOU TAKE YOUR DOGS FOR A WALK IT SHOULD BE ENJOYABLE NOT A CHORE AND YOU SHOULD NOT BE LOOKING OVER YOUR SHOULDER TO SEE IF THERE ARE ANY OVER DOGS ABOUT INCASE YOUR DOGS CHASES THEM .

I think all dogs should have good manners, they learn this thought being pack animals, i often find down this way that i have problems with ordinary dog walkers who just don't under stand how dogs should meet, greet or behave together. You see them on the beach all the time with there nasty little dogs on leads, mine go up to them and try and greet in normal dog fashion, which ends up with the owners screaming and shouting, keep your dogs away mine don't like other dogs, (why) because the poor little buggers are never aloud to interact with others, and the famous saying is ( I don't let mine off because he won't come back) and I say, well if you never let him off how the hell can he learn to come back?????? :-

Dogs are and always will be pack animals. JMO, Di

Just out of curiosity (and it may be in the FAQs) but what is the "right way" for dogs to greet eachother. I have two 15 week pups (my first dogs) and in trying to socialise them I like them to meet other dogs but because they are so young they can be very bouncy...this is true when they meet new people too. I know they are just excited and being friendly but not everyone sees it like that. Any tips to stop this but not to make them too shy or wary? They are pets not working or show dogs (and have just started puppy classes) - I know that it may be better to ask this in the General Discussions - but it's just while you're on the subject so to speak. :-

Thanks

think Ive got two of the bounciest who were jumping up at everyone they met when they were younger started to get them out of it by not allowing them to do it at home by going down to there level to greet them after a few minutes walk away took a bit of time but they are fine now 6 months old and very well behaved on and off the leash

Like Linda says do not allow the dog to jump at you at home

my pups are always doing it to me but thats cos they live in kennals and are always pleased to see me

much easyer when they live indoors .

If you dont allow them to do it to you then why would they do it to someone they dont know and are not sure about .

In the summer I go out in the evernings for a long walk take about 6 dogs

as soon as i sit down they sometimes all get me I never know when its comming its the best feeling in the world

and a little naughty treat for them . w00t always puts me in a good mood :D

Hi

Thanks for the replies - yeah, this is something we are working on at home (with people) - but specifically what's the protocol with other dogs? They are still on the lead at the moment (no concept of recall yet) but they always want to greet other dogs that we come across on our walks. I don't want them to see other dogs as a threat that they need to avoid or are kept from - but I appreciate that like people not all dogs want to be bounced over by pups (no matter how cute!!!)

On your walk you will meet lots of differant owners

to start off find a nice lab or retreiver not to small a breed

not to young walk with them get to know the owner you will soon be letting your pup introduce his self im sure the owner will tell you if he is freindly or not walk for a while next step pup off the lead carry on walking your meet loads of people stop talk let pup introduce his self to dog and owner

its just manners correct the dog if need be and carry on talking just try to avoid agressive dogs im sure your get to know whos who

try to stay calm dont keep on at the dog or it will soon lern to take no notice lol

I LOVE THIS TOPIC

Had a lovely walk this afternoon.Let the pup off with Finn, the other Whippetx, then Spike off with the Greyhound. That way the pup gets to interact with Finn, who he does not chase, and is not left out.I agree with the fact that pups are pack animals, and all mine like to play with other dogs.I do not let the Greyhound off with any other dogs than my own,as she is a powerhouse, and i do not want her banging into someone elses dog.It has been a very interesting topic, and i have a lot of food for thought.Cracker is not aggressive, not is he that bad that i want to exclude him from socialising with other dogs.I will just take on board the advice, and try letting them off in twos. Thanks Gary, you seem to be on a similar wavelength to me.

I also have a problem with strange dogs coming over to "greet" mine when my dogs are on the lead, not because my dogs are nasty just prefer if other ppls dogs kept well away. Yes dogs are pack animals but different packs dont always interact well when they come across each other and there will be tension.

:)) It brought such a smile to my face when you described what happens when you sit down, I get the same, and what a feeling it is. My dogs trust and respect me and that's how they show their love. (don't get me wrong) they can be little buggers sometimes too. I honestly think that if you have a good relationship with your fellow creatures they will

put there heart and soul into repaying you. :)) (and that's all i ask for) Di

The best tip I would give anybody with a dogs is watch Cesar millan, he's got it right, I know not everybody will agree but hell it works. ;)

YOUR STATMENT TELLS ME THAT YOUR NOT CONFIDENT ABOUT THE BEHAVIOUR OF YOUR PACK WHEN APPROCHED BY A SRANGE DOG . IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH OTHER DOGS APROCHING YOURS THEN YOUR DOGS WILL PICK THAT UP AND HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM

IM SORRY TO SAY THIS STEMS FROM THE AMOUNT OF BAD OWNERS THAT LET THERE UNCONTROLABLE DOGS DO WHAT THEY LIKE EVEN ATTACK

I DO AGREE ITS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY .BUT AS FOR A ENJOYABLE WALK I DONT THINK SO

IN AN IDEAL WORLD ALL THE DOGS WOULD GET ON BIT LIKE K9 REALLY LOL

GARY

JUST MY OPINION :D :luck: :luck:
