am new to the forum and wanted to ask of what i need to look out for when looking for a potential show puppy!?

Havent owned a whippet before although i have a cross breed that looks a lot like one!

Have been to many a show and seen lots of breeds and love the look of whippets and now am ready to take the plunge and get one. Just saw the showing bit and though would ask anyone if they could help me in what i need to look out for.

regards

Abbey07

am going to hopefully look at some this weekend!

I would do lots of research on which dogs are out there that appealed to me and then get in touch with the breeders of these dogs - explain that you are hoping to show the pup in the future and then I would be prepared to wait (potentially for a long time) for the right pup to come along; in many cases there will be a waiting list for future litters.

At 8 weeks all anyone can say that a pup has potential, nothing more, as so much can change between then and 6 months!

Very best of luck in your hunt for a pup.

Also meant to say that if the people you contact do not have any plans for a litter they should be able to point you in the right direction of other reputable breeders. :)

What part of the country are you? , then we can direct you in the right area of people who will sell you a show quality pup . but as rch said , at 8 weeks its still very much a quessing game as to the full show potential of any pup .

Even some fo us who have been in the breed longer than we care to mention :- " dont always pick the right one .

Have you decide which , if any , colour you prefer?

have got myself a lovley boy now! and was lucky to find such a kind lady who is going to help me get started on the showing with him. He is a lovely brindle boy and is 5 months old. Hes a bit shy but am sure he should be ok in a day or so.

My cat had a hissy fit and poor pup got a paw but hopefully they should settle. Am gonna have to rename him as he has the same name as my son so any ideas anyone!?

Am gonna be on here all the time for advice and help with him being my first whippet! Hes so lovely and am gonna have a lot of fun showing him.

We have bought him a coat already and am gonna hopefully nip to the richmond show at the weekend to get some more gear and wanted to ask what leads best to show him as i presume a lead and collar is not the ideal! and wheres the best place to find about shows!?

thankyou ladies for all your advice already!

Congrats on your new addition, can I be a nossey git and ask how he is bred? :D

For show leads you can get some lovely ones from here http://www.hideandcollars.co.uk/showset.htm they're not cheap though. Choose one to blend in with your dog - so if he is black, a black lead etc.

There is a pinned post here with all the champ show judges for the rest of the year and also those being annouced for 2009. 2 good websites for downloading schedules are

http://highampress.co.uk/ and http://www.fossedata.co.uk/

For details of forthcoming Open shows you can try http://prodogs.co.uk/

Good luck! :luck:

Good luck with your new boy. :luck: I am sure you will have a great time with him. :huggles: But remember we need photos.

shall try and get my hubby to get some photos of him! and try and post them. Hes lovely and has settled ok. and is at the moment sat beside me watching my pc.

The lady i got him off him shows and says she comes on here but have forgotton what her name on here was! shall call her and ask her as you may already know her!

thanks for all the kind replys, makes getting my new dog a ever better delight knowing i have you all there to help me if i need you all for advice and help. (w00t)

Congratuations on your new addition  What is his name?

If you can get to Richmond tomorrow, you'll see lots of whippets there - about 140 I think

Have a good look at different leads before you rush to buy one, see what other people are using in the ring, or you could end up with lots of expensive mistakes sitting in the bottom of your show bag :b

if you can find a ringcraft class nearby do take your dog along, otherwise general obedience classes and match shows are also useful for socialising and handling a pup.

like everyone else I'm very curious about your pup

at 5 months old you have a better idea how he's going to mature than you would at 2 months old of course, but we don't often find good show material for sale at older ages. I hope whoever you got him from has been straight with you about the dog's good points and bad points. And the dog doesn't have to be Crufts winner material to be worthwhile showing.

Are your two dogs getting on well together?

thanks for the replys. and have now remembered the name from the lady i got him from and shes called 'millie' on here and shes called wendy. A dead nice lady!

we like the name 'Archie' but still not sure but he seems to awnser to it.

He loves to chew and found him chewing a table matt and some other things that where lying around!

My other dog is fine so far. a bit of a growl at first from my dogs (have a king charles and our cross breed thats got some whippet in her.) but they are all happy and have had there tea and a walk together so think so far going well!

Not sure if he will sleep downstairs or up yet - best down i think so he knows his place from the begining.

He loves the sofa and loves my kids (and the kids love him. My son got a lovely suprise after school and says he loves him and wants to call him scooby doo!)

Hope to chat more as the days go on!

I remember Diva's litter - they were lovely :huggles:

Your little boy sounds like my nephew - he loves Scooby Doo at the moment! If our litter had been born a few months later, they would have been called Shaggy, Scooby, Scrappy, Velma, Fred and Daphne!!

i met the whole lot of wendys whippets and they are lovely and got sniffed from head to toe :huggles:

Hes stunning for sure and have totally fallen in love very fast!

Divas a lovely dog and so are all of them and hope i can get to go to some shows with him and try and get my son interested too

We went to windsor show and my son said he would love to do showing with me so am really chuffed to have my son on board to help me! Have got lots to learn though my gosh.

Can i ask where to look for local shows to start him off in!? wheres the best place to look and are they deadlines to enter etc

Look on the link I posted earlier for prodogs.co.uk - you'll just have to search through them all for those that are nearest to you.

Also look on www.arenaprint.co.uk

Hi ya, good to see you here. Told you they were a really helpfull lot ! :)

Pleased to hear Sam is being a normal whippet. I will get the address of the ringcraft club and email you over the weekend.

Josh says hi to his bro, think he is missing him Bless !
