Right lets try and ask these questions as clear as i can

What's the difference between Affix and Prefix to start with.

Why do people have them.....do you have to be a breeder

or have a web site or what.

What purpose do they serve.

How do you get them......do you pay......is it your's forever.

Can you just breed a litter and start calling you pups by

your affix, prefix............what about if your dog has one

already, have you got to carry on and call your pups by

the one the have when you buy them.

Do these questions make sense???????????????

yes Ann, they made perfect sense............unfortunatly, i havent a clue

make perfect sence to me, i would like to know the answers to :b

An affix is added at the beginning of a word when it is called a prefix or at the end of a word when it is called a suffix. In some languages, you can insert an affix in the middle of a word. This is called an infix.

hope that helps

ermmm quick-quickly suffix

eventful-uneventful prefix ;)

NOW GO STAND IN THE CORNER YA NUMPTYS ! eeekkk or is that numpties

a i see so affix is the word ie. kennel name and prefix/sufix is where the word is ahh it all make sence now  :huggles:

think you pay the kennel club for the name you choose and it could be a yearly fee too??? im sure i heard it was around £80

So if you called your whippets

'SOMETHING' Whippets.........the 'SOMETHING' is called an affix.

Yes......?

an affix is like a trade mark or brand name so to speak , only one kennel can have that name , it is mainly used for showing / racing ec so you can tell by its name which kennel it came from .

anyone can have one , you submit your ideas to the kc , think they usually ask for your top 3 ideas , if they are taken or something is very similar you have to keep going untill you get one that you like and is available .

it cost me 5 years ago £75 plus £20 per year to keep it running , yes its yours for life as long as you keep up the annual fee

yes thats right , my affix is saraquele , so any dog bred by me will be called saraquel _______________ whatever lol

Well what about if i brought a whippet with the Saraquele affix and

another with someone else's affix and bred them.

Could i then give the pups my affix or would they have to have

both parents affix's?

In answer to you other bits of the question. If your pup already has a kennel name at the beginning that cannot be changed but you can add yours to the end. For example Beau is Verdant Shining Water. Verdant is the name of his breeder. We are BleakHounds. When Beau was changed, at a cost of £12 I think, he became Verdant Shining Water at BleakHounds. If I was ever to breed a litter, which is unlikely, the pups would start with BleakHounds plus whatever I decided to call each individual pup.

I got my kennel name at the beginning of this year. I applied for it in December and had to give my top seven names. BleakHounds was number four. I got temporary approval quite quickly but then had to wait until February for it to be published in the Kennel Gazette. Thirty days are given for any objections. It finally became official at the end of March. It cost £70 for all the initial work. There is a £20 yearly charge, £17 if you pay by direct debit.

There is more information on the Kennel Club website. Hope this is of help.

I registered mine in 1973, I paid yearly because I couldn't afford the £26 I think to keep it for life and not pay any more!!!!!!!! So it now costs me £17 per annum, but it is MINE!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

What if i was to have a web site called SOMETHING Whippets is that a

affix or just a name ?

I registered my kennel name a crufts 3 years ago .It was slightly cheaper to do there and they could give me an idea of whether it was similar to any other name.

Of my dogs most have the Barnesmore prefix/affix as that is the name of the kennel that bred them .My bitches all have AT OAKMOOREHILL on the end of their names as I now own them and that is my kennel name. The pups I have at the moment are all Oakmorehill some thingas I bred them even though both parents were bred at Barnesmore kennels

An example Anne is Tanya's Danny. He is Oakmoorehill Bafana at Highisland. Oakmoorehill is at the start of his name becaue I bred him Highisland is at the end as that is Tanya's kennel name and she now owns him.

It sounds confusing but is quite easy really

My website is Oakmoorehill show dogs as I don't only have whippets :- "

you can get a site with whatever you want but if you were to breed and register the litter with the kennel club you couldnt just use that name unless you applied for it and was granted it as your affix , you would have to be very carefull not to use a name that is already taken as it may confuse people

say you wanted to use the name saraquele as your website name , if people were looking for my website they will also get yours , very confusing

It seems like most of you wirh Affix's are breeders then....

no not really , to me its mainly the showing side , most people have an affix so people can see there progeny in the field / ring and they know by looking at the affix they can see staright away where it came from ,i dont class myself as a "breeder" more of a whippet loving person who dabbles a bit in the showing of them , gives 100% time , love , commitment and my marbles :- " to the breed and have bred 1 litter in nearly 6 years , is it just me but when i hear the word "breeder" it always gets my mind on back street breeders or pupy farmers  tis just my strange mind (w00t) :clown:

Sorry i wrote that wrong i didn't mean anything by it.......promise :))

I didn't think of showing, it just seemed that breeders had the most

need for an affix but as you said showing is another good reason

to have one

I just have an affix because I'm proud of my dogs, and I want them all to have the "family" name. I've only ever bred 3 litters, the first in 1988, the next in 1993, and the last in 2002, and I've only ever bred because I want a puppy myself. Twice I have kept two pups. I could NEVER contemplate breeding and parting with them all :( So, I wouldn't make a very good breeder :)
