All of a sudden destructive behaviour

Hi any help please I own a press canario and until this week he's been fine.u believe he's suffering from separation anxiety .me and the wife have started new jobs with difficult and long hours.we also lost a dog . further more we are in the middle of a big house renovation.and I think all this has compounded the situation.any advice would be greatly appreciated,I don't want to have to give him away.
 
Poor chap, maybe he is very bored. I would never consider leaving a dog alone for long working hours. Dogs are social pack animals.
Maybe you have more information about his age and what his previous life style was like before your work commitments changed so dramatically.

He was left alone 8 hrs per day 5 days per week.now 10 hrs 3 days one week 4 days the next.hes got plenty of toys etc. So I do spend plenty of time with him
 
If he was fine with being alone for eight hours, but has become destructive when alone for ten, separation anxiety isn't the first thing I'd think of. That said, ten hours is a long time, do you have a dog walker come in to break up his day?

When did you lose your other dog? I'm wondering if that's more of a contributing factor.

In my opinion, 10 hours is far too long to leave a dog alone (Dogs Trust recommend 4 hours, though plenty of dogs are fine for longer). It doesn't occur to some dogs to play with toys when they're on their own, so toys might not help. I would start by getting a dog walker/sitter to come in once a day. Just being able to toilet rather than hang on may reduce some of his stress.
 
What do you call a decent length of time ? Some people may consider 20 minutes a decent time others 45 minutes or longer.! is that really enough. We all have different views on what may be a decent length of time:rolleyes:

Where does he sleep at night time ?
 
He sleeps downstairs in his own comfy bed. I get up at 4am to start a 14 hour day .
 
How long do you walk him for a day, and how much 'you' time does he get in addition to that? Are his walks on or off lead?
 
I take him out an hour a night when I'm on shift.2 hours when I'm not working.the wif can't walk him due to knee issues
 
It dose not sound to me as if he is getting a very good deal out of what time you have for walks and you time, bed time and daytime!
I am sure someone here will have some ideas of what may be fair for him while you both work very hard.
He will not understand the difference between the longer days but a little less of these days. As suggested maybe a dog walker could give him a couple of quality hours on each of your work days.
PS.
Is his own comfy bed in a dog cage or loose in the house.
 
So, if I understand you, you get up at 4 am, work/travel for 14 hours so you are back at around 6 pm then he gets a one hour walk.

Is your wife out all this time too? I'm thinking boredom too.

Can you get a dog walker to break up his day (if he is left for 14 hours, twice would be better than once)?
 
My wife sets off at 830am gets in at 6pm I work 6am til 6pm with an hour's travelling before and after work.
 
I would definitely think about getting a dog walker or as he's a large breed if you weren't sure about someone else walking him maybe have someone come and spend a couple of hours with him for company and garden breaks(presuming you have a garden?), half way through the day... also how old is he and have you had him from a pup or does he have history in another home?
That is an incredibly long time to leave a dog with no break in between, I do understand re work but he really does need you to arrange something for him...
 
So that's still 9½ hours he is left.

The poor lad must have trouble holding his toilet, never mind the boredom.

Please get a dog walker to take him out.
 
I do understand how it is when we have to work long hours - I used to work 12 hour shifts. It's my opinion that having someone come round even just to stay with him, walk round the garden with him and do some easy boredom-busting activities (ask if you'd like suggestions) should help immensely.
 
There is a question that hasn’t been asked and please don’t think that you’re being judged - why have you taken on another life that’s dependent on you? What was his previous situation? As others have suggested, you need someone to come in during your absences. If that can’t be effected either through social or financial constraints you’ll have to make a decision re having him rehomed. I know that this’ll sound hard but I have your dog’s wellbeing to mind.
 
Without wishing to be judgemental, this is no life for a dog, even before your work hours changed.

As others have suggested, you could consider a dog walker or sitter, though I always feel that it's a bit pointless living with a dog if you end up paying someone else to have all the fun of walking together.

Sadly, the other option is rehoming, which I advise you to consider seriously. He really deserves a more fulfilling life.

In an ideal world this dog maybe should be rehomed but there are thousands of dogs in rescue ....not all rescues will take the type of breed the OPs dog is ...
I hope they have been able to resolve the problem and get help....
