Hi all,

I know people are always asking questions about puppy growth, puppy heights etc etc but hey, I'm going to ask anyway :- "

DeeDee Monster is 16 weeks old today, and to us is a perfect little poppet - the prettiest puppy in the world (of course! :D ) but this morning on our walk she was accused of being a cross! Now lurchers are fantastic, and if DeeDee was a cross it would make no difference, but in a way I'd like some reassurance that DeeDee isnt "unusual" in anyway!

Anyway, the story is we were on our morning walk today and we saw a lady down by the river with a GSD. Friendly thing, and DeeDee stopped to say hello. The woman said "Oh what a pretty lurcher you have there, how old is she!" and I said, something along the lines of "Thank you, she's 16 weeks today, and she's actually a whippet." And the woman said "Really? Wow she's huge isnt she, for a whippet that young, I assumed she was a lurcher, perhaps a greyhound cross. My neighbours have whippets and they're only just bigger then her. Bless."

I didnt really know what to say to that! but her dog had started to pull away so she said have a nice walk etc and went.

Now, I know DeeDee is shooting up at an alarming rate, but I didnt think she was particularly big for her age. So I've measured her today and would like some opinions on whether she is indeed big for her age, and if she is, will this mean she's going to be some kind of monster whippy when she's all grown up?

She is:

14 inches long

13 and 1/2 inches from base of neck to base of tail

And her neck is 9 and 1/2 inches in circumference.

Thanks :)

I would take no notice of the lady whippets come in all sizes

Normal way to measure if from ground to top of the shoulder - the height of the dog. Also, what does she weigh?

I wouldn't worry about what this woman said to you. When i took Holly to the vets for her jab, the veterinary nurse thought she was a lurcher!! The other day i was out with my gorgeous Frankie and a man asked me if he was a lurcher (w00t) I think that Whippets are a lot bigger and sturdier than a lot of people imagine them to be.

Sorry that should say 14" high not long!

And she was weighed on Saturday and was 6.05 kilos.

My little fawn bitch Evie measured 15 1/2" at the shoulder at 16 weeks of age & just under 18 1/2" by the time she'd finished growing.

I don't think your little girl is tall for her age.

No I don't think Dee Dee is a monster whippet! Holly is 14 weeks and at the weekend she weighed 6.4kg (just over 14lb) She is about 14.5" tall, but she was wriggling so that might not be very accurate!

Dont worry too much about her size. As Lesley says they come in all shapes and sizes - my two are totally different. Oscar is taller by 2 inches elegant and slim, hes 22and half inches

Kobi is smaller, around 20 inches plumper and has a thicker coat too. and I actually think Kobi weighs more than Oscar for some reason

I get asked all sorts of funny questions too when Im out - asking which one is the whippet?? :- "

Anyway they have totally different characters and I love them both equally too.  and wouldnt swap them for the world. :)

Thanks for all your replies :) I can see she seems to be pretty average at the moment. Perhaps that woman's neighbours have Igs?

Anyway, dont worry though, even if DeeDee ends up the size of a stripey Wolfhound, we'll still love her, cheeky little minx that she is.

She's been playing outside today and I've taken some pics, so if any good ones come out, I'll post them up so anyone who's interested can see how she's coming on :)

Your Dee dee isnt big, puppies can look quite chunky which is good. When I first took Frodo to ringcraft the 'very knowledgable' person on duty said he was nice but would be much too big to show. hes 20.5" as an adult and at six months we were wondering if he would be BIG enough.

hi sarah,

she is just perfect ,well she will be in my eyes as well as yours im sure.

the woman most probably as never seen a whippet before,we get people asking us (what kind of dogs do you call them) ,strange isnt it.

dont worry sarah she is and always will be perfect im sure.

and can we have some pics please. dee dees half sisters say a big hello

i measured Digit at 23" yesterday, although my partner swears he's 24"

either way, he's one big whippey boy! lots of people refuse to believe he's 'all whippet' even when i explain that i have his pedigree, and he certainly is, they smile benevolently at me and suggest that maybe someone's pulled the wool over my eyes and he's whippet x greyhound!

he is much to big to show - but just the right size for whippety snuggles

Well Tilly is 19 3/4" so i guess she is big

Bean is 6 months and is 17", i hope she willstay like that

But like peoples say whippets come in all sizes, if you see her again tell her to mind her own business....as you have the best whippet in the world :huggles:

Couldn't agree more but I thought I'd check the KC standard as I couldn't remember it.
http://www.the-kennel-club.org.uk/discover.../hound/h793.htm

Height: dogs: 47-51 cms (18 1/2 - 20 ins); bitches: 44-47 cms (17 1/2 - 18 1/2 ins).

If judges would adhere stricktly to the size requirement according to the standard, there would not be many Whippets in the ring here in OZ.

Anyway, your puppy sounds perfectly normal, if anything on the small side of the normal (considering that there are 22" and 23" ones on the tall side), my guess would be she will end up around 18" - 19". PERFECT! :)

The neighbor probably has JRT :)

Do not worry, 14" at 16 weeks is not a large whippet, in fact I would say smaller than average rather than bigger. Anyway they can change a lot in the next few months. Neither of her parents are large at all, so I would be very surprised if were. Looking forward to seeing the new photos of Deedee, now that I have her baby brothers(see them in Janimal's posting)
