Now that I have informed the breeder about James I can tell you all as well.....

unfortunately the day we brought James home it was pretty obvious he had a problem with his eyes.

He has seen my vet and a specialist already and he needs to have surgery on his left eye( looks like the right eye is correcting itself ).

He has had fucithalmic gel for a week and is now having artificial tears put in his eyes 8 times a day to help keep a protective film over his eyeballs.

The vets both feel that we need to try to delay surgery due to his tender age but we also have to seriously consider the risks to him and his sight if we hang on.

does anyone here have a dog of any breed which has had this problem and had/not had surgery?

here are some pictures so you can see how bad his eyes look at times.....

Above is a picture of James this evening, his fur looks a bit wet round his eyes because of the eye gel we are putting in so often but as you can see his eyes do look much more open some of the time....in the picture he is about to curl up and go to sleep so they were even more open earlier.

I have spoken to on e of the vets this evening and we are putting him back on the fucithalmic gel as well because that contains antibiotics too and we need to make his eyes as comfy as possible and to try and hold off on operating for a bit longer to let him grow a bit more into his skin to see if that will help him at all, however if he gets any worse at all then we would have to let him have surgery.

I had it with a Shih Tzu nearly 35 years ago. He had surgery, recovered nicely and easily, and never had another problem again. Hopefully it will go as well for your little one.

oh poor lamb! u have really had no luck lately hunny. ive got everything crossed for u and the wee lad

Yes - I've suffered from it - Yes, me not the dog!!

It is painful to have your eyes continually being scratched by your eyelashes and damaging to sight. You'll need to be guided by your vet of course, but if he can be operated on soon I would, even if this maybe means further operation when he is grown.

40 years ago I bred Beagles, and have noticed in recent years how their skin has become much looser, and ears longer - with detriment to the breed imo. This problem I would think is a result of that.

Best wishes to the lovely boy.

Oh Bless him, he is a sweetheart, you know how sorry I am to hear about the little fellows eyes, such a sod after everything you had with little Parker.

Good Luck with the treatment and speedy recovery :huggles:

try not to worry my friends lhasa had entopion in one of his eyes when he was a puppy after surgery it never bothered him again sending you and dear parker lots of hugs :huggles:

Just want to wish James and you the best of luck :luck:

It seems very unfair that this should have happened after all the trials you have been through with Parker, have any of James' littermates got the same problem?

it's hard to tell if the littermates had a problem as the video footage we have of them at six weeks is a bit blurry BUT the only thing i can say for sure is that James had the problem before we bought him as I have looked back at the photographs we took and one sent to me by the breeder and you can clearly see that his eyes don't look right....hindsight is a wonderful thing.

I am very disappointed but mostly for James as he has had to suffer sore eyes and is still having treatment and also to be honest it's jolly inconvenient having to have so many vet visits and it feels a bit like it's hanging over you all the time until it gets fully sorted.

I agree, I don't think their faces are as neat and tidy as they used to be, they often look quite jowly now, less beagle and more like bassett/fox hound facially.

Poor lad , how awful for him

Have you informed his breeder . and if so what did they say ?

Beagles are a fabulous breed but certainly not so 'neat and tidy' nor so workmanlike as they used to be. This is an example of exaggerations getting into a breed. It saddens me to see the way the breed is heading - although they are still adorable.

:( Ah poor lad, friend's Toy Poodle had it a few years ago but recovered well after surgery... i had a Lurcher that had Districhiasis but luckilly never too bad to warrant an op.

Years ago I bred Basset Hounds and Entropian was rife then, Surgery used to cure the problem, and most stock with Entropian wasnt then bred from (So they say!!!)

Its where the lashes Curl inward and rub the Eye (Just incase someone did not know, I'm sure you do)

Poor James, from what the folks on here have said it sounds like the operation may be a real help to him, best of luck :luck: :luck:
