Anyone know how to get a thorn or splinter out of a whippets front toe on her pad?

Poppy got one this evening and she wont let me hold her leg still for too long.

Dont want to take her to the vets they might have to knock her out.

I just use a needle and tweezers....usually dip the needle into antiseptic first or pass through a flame...

it does help if the dog will keep still for you though....makes life a lot easier. Once youve got it out

I use lots of salty water and wash it daily and make sure there is no infection....otherwise it may be a vets job.

I usually try and soak it out with salty water - but that does mean they have to keep their foot in the water for a while.

If you can't get it out easily with a sterilised needle/tweezers (and you do have to be careful you don't push it in deeper) then soaking in warm salt water or failing that, a poultice. Magnesium sulphate paste is readily available from chemists and has a 'drawing' action or an old fashioned warm kaolin poultice might do the trick.

thanks for the advice soaked her paw well and managed to get what turned out to be a small splinter of glass out.as for kaolin poultise i looked on internet and have orderd some as they seam as though they might be handy to have in.as they can be used for quiet a few things. so thanks again for your advice

"You could use a poultice of Animalintec- available form Countrywide or any equine store at around a fiver a packet. Secure in place with Vetwrap. I always keep it in my First Aid box-brilliant for drawing out thorns, etc.
