Are you a culprit for yanking?

Same as @doggie1 - we have to do some yanking to get Jimbo out of his zone from time to time, or to avoid him getting into it in the first place. When we first had him his lunging was much worse, he would jump and spin away from us so hard he'd sort of spring back on the tension on the lead which I'm sure looked horrendous, but there was no avoiding it. Thankfully, that behaviour has all but disappeared now, but he does get the occasional yank to corss a road for example if there are dogs coming in his direction. So yes, I'm probably that terrible person you're all referring to :(
Don't feel bad @arealhuman, I'm right there with you. Eddi used to jump around like a demented ballerina, doesn't seem to do the pirouettes now. He didn't bark at the stationary behind the gates dogs today either. Bit of a wharket at some dogs over the other side of the river, took him down the other side, I couldn't be bothered with the training.

I'd like to add that I was really referring to 'extreme' yankers (think I made that word up) for the ones that are painful to watch and also the young pups that @JoanneF mentioned.

I was just reflecting on when we do it to our dogs and that sometimes you just do it without thinking. Hands up, I am a culprit to sometimes when Dennis has been sniffing the same thing for ages but I do try to use other methods when possible.

So no judging from my side. Just reflection!

No, definitely not - as I said, you do what you have to do. The ones I hate are those who yank the dog quite angrily when it's just having a good sniff in the verges, or looking calmly at another dog, or - and this really annoys me - trying to have a wee. Basically the anger/punishment yanks, rather than the best way you've found of avoiding incidents you really need to avoid.

At the other end of the scale is a woman I saw crossing a busy road with a shih tzu yesterday who just stopped in the road... the woman just waited for her, giving extremely gentle encouragement, despite the cars approaching:eek:
