My very first litter I had 8 babies & ended up with 4 - interestingly enough the breeders of the dogs & bitches had NEVER had cleft palates in their lines :x   Wot a load of crap
Yes, funny that it should only happen to you, isn't it!  Either that or they say, yes we do get them ......... well, wouldn't it have been courteous to warn you

Lastly, I am the biggest sook in the whole wide world, I nearly pass out when my kids have a tiny scratch & there is blood - however, many years ago a very experienced breeder "made" me do the dewclaws of my puppies    I was sweating & nearly vomiting :x   shook like a leaf & nearly cried, however, I did one & have never been to a vet since :D   Completely paniked myself that they would grow back coz I didn't get the core, but in the last 10yrs since I have been doing them, no re-growths    Do you have an experienced breeder who can teach you the art of dewclaw removal?????

How brave of you Shenace.  Blood, pus no problems, I can deal with all the major stuff but every time I have a litter dewclawed I think there is NO WAY on this earth that I could ever do that cut.  I can hold the puppies but if my Vet retires before I stop having puppies, I think they are going to have dewclaws!!!

 CONGRATULATIONS Lana, Dino & Jillie on the latest Aslan litter.

Hope the pups are doing well, sorry to hear of the initial setback but Mother Nature knows best. Big :huggles: from Auntie Tinker

All your problems would be solved if you did the dewclaws, I have been spoilt as Steve always does mine. However my first litter back in 1987 I took to the vet and he stitched the area and basically made a mountain out of a molehill.

Congrats Lana! Lovely babies. Sorry to hear about the 2 little ones :(

Wendy

Congratulations on the beautiful litter  .

Sorry about the two little ones :( .

well aren't you good at keeping secrets!! Now we know what all that Sexy talk was about :)

congrats on the new arrivals, sad to hear about the loss of the 2 lil ones!!! it's never easy :(

Best of luck with the other babes

Clean bill of health for all of them yesterday - except for me - I am as sick as anything. Wretched 'Flu. :(

They are beautiful puppies - well why wouldn't they be, they are whippets after all

Sorry you lost the two little ones, it can be heartbreaking - but you still have a bumper healthy lot, and once they open their eyes, you will maybe be grateful that there aren't two extra (w00t)

Enjoy them, and congratulations

Don't beat yourself up Lana, it happens and there was nothing you could do to odds it.    Sometimes it takes a day to realise something is not quite right.  :(   At least with clefts it is over and done with and you can move on and enjoy the rest of the litter. :huggles:
Thanks Caroline :huggles:

They must be joking! It is also possible that the receptionist does not have an idea what she is talking about. Who in their right mind would want to put 2 days old pups under anesthetic or even light sedation. Why don't you write a letter to the head vet expressing your astonishment, it would be interesting to see if he knows about this new practice.
Seraphina
I won't go into it because it's a long story but just the way the conversation happened over two phone calls with two different receptionists and both going off to check with the vet who was coming out, I'd say that it's either a new vet straight out of uni who really doesn't want to do dew claws and that was a way of putting me off - or it's a new money grabbing tactic by the surgery as a whole.

At my last visit - which totalled $300 - I was informed that no-one was now allowed to pay off bills. Everything has to be paid for holus bolus up front, on the spot. What happens when you have a bill of something like $1000 or more? - not everyone can get their hands on money like that in one go.

I'm deliberating at present how to go about making my dissatisfaction known. But before I do, I want to see if I can get hold of Layla's records from her accident to present time as I would like to have her checked out by someone else and they would be handy to have. Don't want to get them offside and then ask for the records - would be highly unlikely I'd get them then.

Sorry to hear that you have lost 2 of your beautiful puppies  which boy was it?
it was boy 1 Alison.

And as for birthday? Well, check your show diary, you don't want to miss a puppy class by one day, do you!
Now there's a smart woman! I hadn't even got to that stage of thinking yet.

So sorry about your 2 babies Lana . I had a similar thing with Fleurs first litter ( not cleft pallets though) , it is very distressing :(

When we have clients transfer from another Vets to us ( and Vice versa) we ask for all the animals details to be faxed through  . how else could the vet treat the animal if the past history was unknown

Never had a vet refuse and neither have we refused to fax details

and as for the receptionist telling you about sedation (w00t) for those pups , Idiot  Perhaps, as you said they dont want to do it :(

I have actually done dew claws on some of my Dane pups, once, under experienced friend's supervision. But they were so much bigger and it was easy to see what I was doing. The Whippets squirm around so much, I would be terrified I cut off too much - or more likely not enough. My vet does comes here so there is no traveling and any upset. It takes few minutes and they are all back with their mum.

I just wonder if the Veterinary Institute considers sedating or anesthetizing such young puppies acceptable?
