Twenty years I've been a client at that surgery

I exaggerated slightly - it's 18 years - close enough.

I know I should have checked for clefts as soon as they were born but I was just so excited to have them, and it was so early in the morning when she finished that I had trouble just keeping my eyes open until 3 am to just see that she was ok with them before I put my head down for a nap.

As I said - I did check her mouth the next morning but couldn't see anything so thought perhaps I was just being a worry wart. Didn't check the boy yesterday because he seemed ok, .... small ... but ok.

So sorry about your 2 little ones :(

Best of luck with your puppies, they look lovely :luck: :luck: :luck:

Don't beat yourself up Lana, it happens and there was nothing you could do to odds it. Sometimes it takes a day to realise something is not quite right. :( At least with clefts it is over and done with and you can move on and enjoy the rest of the litter. :huggles:

And fancy exaggerating like that ............ we'll never believe anything you say again!!! :b ;) :p

Unfortunately, I have lost the two littlies.  The girl left us this morning and the boy this evening.

Congratulations on the litter! Sorry to hear you lost 2, so sad when there is something wrong and nothing can be done for them :(

GET THIS - the new receptionist at my vets today tried to tell me (as she had been directed to, by the new vet, I'm assuming) that each puppy would have to "go into surgery" and "be anaesthetised" to have their dew claws done. !.
They must be joking! It is also possible that the receptionist does not have an idea what she is talking about. Who in their right mind would want to put 2 days old pups under anesthetic or even light sedation. Why don't you write a letter to the head vet expressing your astonishment, it would be interesting to see if he knows about this new practice.

Sorry to hear that you have lost 2 of your beautiful puppies :( which boy was it?

The others look gorgeous! And as for birthday? Well, check your show diary, you don't want to miss a puppy class by one day, do you! :- " :luck:

I won't go into it because it's a long story but just the way the conversation happened over two phone calls with two different receptionists and both going off to check with the vet who was coming out, I'd say that it's either a new vet straight out of uni who really doesn't want to do dew claws and that was a way of putting me off - or it's a new money grabbing tactic by the surgery as a whole.

At my last visit - which totalled $300 - I was informed that no-one was now allowed to pay off bills. Everything has to be paid for holus bolus up front, on the spot. What happens when you have a bill of something like $1000 or more? - not everyone can get their hands on money like that in one go.

I'm deliberating at present how to go about making my dissatisfaction known. But before I do, I want to see if I can get hold of Layla's records from her accident to present time as I would like to have her checked out by someone else and they would be handy to have. Don't want to get them offside and then ask for the records - would be highly unlikely I'd get them then.

Sorry to hear that you have lost 2 of your beautiful puppies  which boy was it?
it was boy 1 Alison.

Now there's a smart woman! I hadn't even got to that stage of thinking yet.

Hi Lana

Sorry to hear about your two little ones- being 6 days early wouldn't have helped. They look lovely in the pics! Good luck with them.

I'm so sorry about the little uns Lana, so heartbreaking for you :(

And as for the vet  sounds as though it's best to change

Hey Lana

Sorry to hear about the 2 babies :( mother nature has an odd way of showing how she works.

My very first litter I had 8 babies & ended up with 4 - interestingly enough the breeders of the dogs & bitches had NEVER had cleft palates in their lines :x Wot a load of crap  Anyway, my vet did find 2 that only the trained eye could see (and at that stage my eye was very green) their first half of their mouth was fine & it was way at the back a tiny hole - they didn't bubble when they drank (again, I was really green & just thought that 4 were pigs & 4 weren't) anyway, heart wrenching stuff & I will never forget it :(

With regards to the vets, if you request the info regarding Layla, they have to give it to you - you have paid for the consult & advise & if you ask the information should be forthcoming. The only err of caution would be maybe they will play silly buggers & "lost" the info in their system. I would like to think not however.

Lastly, I am the biggest sook in the whole wide world, I nearly pass out when my kids have a tiny scratch & there is blood - however, many years ago a very experienced breeder "made" me do the dewclaws of my puppies  I was sweating & nearly vomiting :x shook like a leaf & nearly cried, however, I did one & have never been to a vet since :D Completely paniked myself that they would grow back coz I didn't get the core, but in the last 10yrs since I have been doing them, no re-growths  Do you have an experienced breeder who can teach you the art of dewclaw removal?????

DON'T YOU DARE CALL A BOY TRIP (w00t) (w00t)
